Another possibility is a bad contact in the relay. Over-use, or a pump that pulls extra amps can cause the relay contacts to arc and burn, and they wont make a reliable contact without having to jiggle the buttons. You can clean the contacts with a small thin file (auto parts places still keep “points files” for the old vehicles that still have point and these will work fine.) Or you can just replace the relay. It sits on the back of the motor between the two cylinder banks. You can hit the switch to see which one clicks when you hit the down switch. It is easy to replace and is not an expensive part. It isnt $5.00 however, so it is not exactly “cheap”.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
BCB and oldtimer are right. I had to do this on my last cat. It would just click and went and bought new one to replace ( 12.00 ), low and behold the other one went out the next trip out, so no more than they cost i would just buy 2 and have one for a spare for when the next one goes out. One is for trim up and one is for trim down.
Good deal. All I can say is that anytime you can walk into a Merc (or BRP or Yamaha or whatever) shop and buy a part and come out for $12, you did pretty good. The seal kit for a lower unit is over 50 bucks. Water pump is over 30. For the price of a set of 2.5L rings for all 6 pistons, I can buy a complete set of pistons _and_ rings for a Chevy 350 motor.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
