Ive never experienced anything but courtesy and consideration from both the staff and participants in times past but this year everyone mustve lost their heads. And someone else unprompted remarked the same thing to me at the social last night also, so it aint just me.First was the mess trying to get into the cove for inspection Thursday morning. A whole bunch of guys waiting to take-off were packed up too close to the north bank leaving very little room for those incoming, who were more all over the place than usual too. The add a joker idling outbound against all of the inbound boats and I ended up in the gravel trying to avoid running into everybody and dinging all 4 blades on my prop in the process. Then the guy ahead of me either didnt realize or didnt care that going under the inspection bridge was supposed to be 2 wide so after zig-zagging the whole way he finally made up his mind to go under it in the middle. When I said something to one of the guys up there next to Ivan he just laughed; but he may have just not heard what I said too. Then another joker in front of the one in front of me didnt understand to wait to pull the kill switch until well past the bridge despite everyone hollering to wait. Other than the prop damage all that is actually forgettable though. But what took the cake was the jerks who worked their way up the bank to the point I was on, went between me and the bank, caught a fish and decided to set up camp all well within the 50 yards from me specified in the rules. Then when I said something to them instead of any courtesy or consideration they argued anything they could think of from I “wasnt anchored” to I “only said something because they caught a fish”, to the definition of “50 yards” (which anyone who has ever played football can easily gauge how far half a football field is), to I “passed them and kept going” despite me showing them my gps tracks showing that I had been there since the morning run from the take-off, to “people do it to them all the time” as if that makes it both OK and legal. The really sad thing was it was a father and his adult son and reflects very poorly on the character of both.I know that this happens and I debated the rest of the day whether to protest their weigh-in but figured that I was here to have fun and wouldnt stoop to the level of degenerating into an ugly whizzing contest. I do know that when you let people get by with that sort of behavior it simply rewards such and promotes it to happen again, but the juice just wasnt going to be worth the squeeze in this case and Ive long since learned to reserve letting my ego take control in such cases. Since I was by myself (and now Im glad neither of my kids were there with me after all) I didnt have any witnesses on my behalf, but I did take pictures though. Anyway, I know were all living more and more in a “me first” society but until now and with few exceptions the BassCat family and the OI have been a sanctuary from such self-centeredness. It was just a very discouraging experience. I do hope all of you are more disciplined and considerate than that and even refuse to condone such behavior.Yall take care and hope your OI experience was as much fun as it has been for me in times past. I know I havent been online here much in the last year or so due to some heavy commitments with my work but I do check in and read up from time to time.DekeDeke
Deke, I have never been to the OI and i hate to hear of situations like this. All of us at one point or another have been treated like this before. Dont worry, carma likes to play jokes on people like that.
this being my first oi im not sure how past ones were. I have been in several of the cystic fib. tournys out of the same dock and will say that the oi system for livewell checks was more fluid. Also it seemed as if the wind was causing a bit of trouble for boats coming in to get in line for livewell check. we were on the bank by the launch ramp and noticed that the boats on the inside were being crowded over by the outside boats and that was all complicated by the boats launching at the same time from the ramp. Also boats waiting to leave in their flight were being pushed back in that direction further compounding the problem. This morning seemed to move a bit better as the wind wasnt as bad. I also had a boat in front of me going thru the bridge that wanted to use the whole lane. I just laid back and let him go thought maybe he wasnt comfortable going thru with another boat beside him. all in all for the number of boats to process i thought it went very smooth. I cant imagine what it was like when they had over 700 going thru. Sorry to hear of your troubles maybe next time will go smoother for you.
Odd this comes up. Unfortunately Im not there but I hope to be next year. I have however noticed what seems to be around 30% or so of my local clientele that seems to live in that me first world you spoke of. Ive talked to other business owners and heard the same thing. Each of us originally wondered if it was just us or possibly our businesses growing(the wrong direction). This again confirms my sad suspisions. Its been only in the last two years or so that Ive noticed it, but Ive definately noticed. I have also had similar experiences recently on the water. I honestly did not handle it as well and threw a lure at the guys head. Yes I pulled back before it hit him(he was that close) and Im still working on my personal maturity level when someone grossly violates my personal space on the water. We could all stand to be a bit more concious of those around us and it is that much more pleasant to experience acts of courtesy when they seem to be farther apart. Its a good post in my oppinion and one we all need to hear from time to time. Thanks for the opportunity to vent myself.
My experience at the OI was very positive. Everyone was very courteous and nice. I am sure there were some bad apples but overall the event was awesome!
Being fresh on my mind when I posted it Im sure my post sounds like a big gripe but I really didnt mean it that way. This was my 8th or 9th OI and although Im not a tournament fisherman I have fished a number of other what I call “Goody-bag” tournaments which are geared for fun and prizes rather than just straight cash for the top-N finishers. BassCats OI is unmistakeably the best run tournament I have ever seen, and the fact that they can run 400+ boats and even as many as 800 boats in times past is phenomenal. Im not griping at all about the tournament. I just think that a few but increasing number of the participants have begun to not reflect and return the thought and consideration that the company has put into providing this event for them. But I can remember my first OI right after I got my first bassboat, a PII. I was sooo nervous at the size and scale of the event, all the congestion and not knowing where to go and what to do, but I learned by watching and emulating. So as I said, the guy going against the flow, the guy zig-zagging through the inspection and the guy who yanked his kill switch early are all easily forgivable and forgettable. Not giving enough room for the incoming boats should have been addressed and I took a hit to the tune of ruining a Trophy prop from a resellability standpoint, but its really nobodys fault and Im not bitter about it. I can blame myself as much as anybody for it happening.Youre right though, it still is an awesome event and on a wonderful lake that Ive become quite familiar and at home on, and offers something for everybody, clear water or colored, deep or shallow, stripers, walleye, smallmouth, spots, and an occasional meanmouth; not just southern warm water largemouth fishermen.DekeDeke
I had a great time with the entire experience; just didnt catch anything large enough to weigh. I will do better next year if still on Norfolk.
We had a good time. For the amount of boats on the water its amazingly smooth. The only issue I had was people staging up front at blast off. I felt like a fish swimming upstream trying to get where I needed to be each day but thats going to happen with 50 boats much less 500. We only had two or three boats even pull up close to us all week. Heynow that I think of it maybe thats why we weighed in light LOL. Really, these owners are not typically first time boat operators. I thought overall it was great.
