Well the ice here in northern MN is finally letting go, and I plan to take my Puma for the first test spin. The local Merc shop said to use Optimax oil (it has a 225 Pro XS) so I bought a gallon. I went to add the oil this evening and noticed that the remaining oil in the reservoir is the dark blue-ish stuff, while the Optimax oil is kinda golden. So my noob question is this: is it OK to mix two different types of oil? And is the Optimax oil the stuff I should be using? Thanks for your help

Not sure what Optimax oil is. Use either Premium Plus (make sure its Plus, not just Premium) or DFI.

Last I read the latest mercury service bulletin indicated Optimax use the DFI Pro Xs use the premium plus. It said the optimax runs at a lower rpm therefore needed the detergents mixed with the oil to ensure it burned cleaner. The proxs operated higher rpm so the premium plus was fine. But I believe that was 3-4 years ago. That seems to be disputed both ways since the oil came out. But Im sure many will chime in here. Ultimately I dont believe either will void any warranties as I dont believe there is proof the oil cause premature engine failure. Lots of opinions on this issue

Yes should be DFI (Optimax) Oil. If not available Premium Plus is acceptable. Mixing will cause no harm.

thanks, guys. thats what I figured, but Im approaching everything with an abundance of caution til Ive got a season in the boat under my belt. its so great having a resource like this board!

Either will work fine though they need to be used one or the other. They will mix fine now and be fine as long as you run one or the other. Though select one style for your uses and stick to it. The DFI oil has carbon guard in it to prevent coking in the exhaust. They will burn fine in mixture for brief monthly periods, though will clabber together if you continue to use both and they age past a few months.
