i had forgotten to ask BCB this summer and Phils post about taking some water in reminded me . Is the center floor drain flow rate constricted on purpose? This summer I took a little water over the bow 1/2″ ,in cockpit floor, and it seemed to take longer than an open drain should have. Visualy it doesnt look clogged, though i didnt take the cover plate off . That was the first time with substantial water in the cockpit and my thinking was if it was a lot more it would take forever to drain into the bilge. regards Bob Olinski
Bob Your drain is large enough to handle just about anything that can come over the bow. However, do check to make sure the opening is sufficient. If youve been stepping on the drain it could have bent the aluminum louvres that go over the opening and thus be restricting your water flow to the bilge.
Bobcat, As Phil said your drain will handle alot of water..FAST. I was on Lake Ontario this past summer and took some water over the bow. It wasnt going anywhere. I took the cover off the drain that night and noticed the vents were crushed shut from stepping on it so much. I used a Flat head Screw driver and pryed them back open. The next day I hit a wave wrong and took a little over. It was gone before I new it. The water was going so fast down the drain it created a whirlpool effect. Take the cover off and open the vents. I am sure they are bent down. Good Luck Jamey
Thanks fellows, It does look to to be pressed down. Ill take it off today and correct it and be aware of stepping on it in the future. Bob Olinski
Bobcat, When you get that drain cover up, you may have four elevators under the corners. These allow water to drain under the floor drain as well as over. If you dont have those risers, then parts could supply them, they are a custom made part for BCB. We do think more drainage could be there if you fill the center up. On these cockpit style boats, the water tends to go to the cockpit if you tip on in the rough stuff. Though it would be laughed at by others as opponents would tout that we need a large drain to get the water out. Assumptions would be made that we had to do that because of a rough water issue. Fact is that we have an excellent reputation in the big water, though we again think a larger drain grid would be handy. It will drain in a minute or so, though it seems like an eternity when you are holding your feet up! BCB
BCB To be clear, politicaly correct, evenhanded, for any detractors reading this post. The day I took on a little water ,Champlain was at 4 to 6 feet and building and a 100 ferry wake was adding its confusion to the mix. the boat was doing fine. I just needed to gun it a bit more to clear the bow over a biggun. Bob
Bobcat, It was extreme conditions when I took water also. On Lake Ontario while crossing the main lake in 20+ MPH winds….worst waves I have ever seen. Most guys in that tournament never tried to cross back and called it quits. I took a little water but the boat handled great. That evening after paring for the second day my non-boater was thinking about quiting when he heard where I wanted to go. He said the guy he fished with that day almost killed them. They were sitting in water up to there thighs all day and didnt catch a thing. After explaing to him what I was driving (Bass Cat Puma) and having my co-angler from that day talk to him he decieded to fish. Well when we got to our first spot. He wanted to Kiss me. He was so excited that he was bone dry. He was singing prasies all day long about how well Bass Cats rode. Not to mention I got him on some fish and almost had him a limit. I know he will be a future Bass Cat owner. Jamey
To add to the comments. I have run 3-4 foot wind blown chop and with occasional combinations from tour boats causing the stray cross wind 6 footer, and I have never taken water over the sides or bow. I didnt say I stayed dry, but it was all spray.
