Hello all, I recently purchased an 05 Puma with an 09 merc 250 xs. I have a few queastions I was hoping somoene could help me with. Ive fished for 35 years and been in a lot of boats but this is my first personally owned higher end bass boat. Sorry if some of the questions are probably common sense to most.1) With my partner and I ive had it up to about 72 mph , it starts chine walking pretty heavily. Ive backed off at that point but my old partner advised me thats the boat trying to get on the pad and I can trimp up a little more to get it on pad. I was apprehensive about doing so and have trimmed down. My question is when it starts chine walking does that mean Ive reached my top safe speed with my particular setup or can I trim up a tad more and get on pad as suggested?2) Is it possible to find or get an owners manual or onine info regarding the boat? I havent been able to find anything online.3) I was told by the guy I bought it from there is 3 fuel tanks, 2 large ones and 1 reserve. How do i swith to the reserve tank if needed? I know I can switch between left and right fuel tanks with the selector switch in front of the motor . Im assuming the fuel selector swith on the console is strictly for the bult in fuel gages?4) The next one is a motor question . Ive noticed a lod beep in the last couple of days when im taking off and trimming the motor. It only beeps once loudly when im hitting the trim to get on plane. It doesnt do it while Im running. Is this because Im trimming too fast and its not getting water? Could it be because i need to put hydraulic fluid in the trim motor?5) Does anyone know what the recomended rpm limit is on this motor?6) On the livewell switch below the gear shifter there is an empty slot and an suto position. If i fill the livewell and leave it on the auto position does that mean it will continually drain some water and refill it to a certain poi nt? The reason I ask is because in the summer I like to fill me livewell and out ice in it and dont want to keep bringing in new water.7) There are a few small dings here and there , nothing larger than a dime. Is there some kind of epoxy or filler i can put on these spots to keep them from spreading? what polish is recomended ? This forum is your manual…best resource there is!
First , welcome to the family . — Now Ill try to give you a couple of answers . — 1. Chine walk is nothing but pure physics . — The boat starts ” rocking ” side to side AFTER it gets on the pad , because you only have a small percentage of the hull actually contacting the water . — The rotation of the prop pushes the right side of the boat UP , and the boat rolls the left side DOWN . — This can be easily compensated for with MINOR steering corrections made at the right time . ( SEAT TIME IS YOUR FRIEND IN THIS MATTER ) — The old timers called it ” JACKING ” the wheel . — Do a search in the forum threads under ” chine walk ” . Theres an excellent instructional video on the subject . —– 2. This forum IS your owners manual . — Best source of data on Basscats EVER !! — All you need do is ask , and youll get an answer , whether you like it or not . — 3. Best advice here is to call the factory . 870-481-5135 . — 4. Im a Yamaha guy , but my brothers merc will beep like that if the oil level in the upper tank is a little low . ( just a maybe on that one ) — 5. Probably 5500 to 6000 R.P.M. — 6. Empty means just that . — Auto fills it up . — 7. Marine-tec is a good epoxy type product for filling small dings in solid gel . — Even comes in different colors . — Any repairs made to polyflake should be done by a pro . — As for finish care products , PRO-TEC is the real deal , which are sold by another Basscatter . — Hope this helps you out some , and again , welcome to the family . — Hoss
^^^^^^^ is pretty much correct with some corrections.3. Your 3 tank set up……….left pulls out of the tank located under the seat / right pulls from the two tanks against the transom simultaneously. 4. you may have low oil in the upper tank on the side of the engine. it should be completely full. If not, with the engine running, remove the small black plug and allow the tank to fill. you may also have water in the in the vst. if not one of those you probably need a tech to determine the problem. 5. Your rev limiter on that engine is set around 6100 rpms. You should target something between 5500 and 6000.6. if you leave the aerator on it will overflow through the overflow nozzle located inside the livewell. Auto really means closed. 7. Marine Tex not marine tec8. Protec as well. http://www.protecproducts.com Everything Protec has works really well!
As was mentioned above:1. You cannot trim up to stop the Chine. Trimming down will slow the boat, expand the pad area contacting the water, thus stopping the chine. You have more speed to be gained. You will have to learn to drive the chine. Small left steering inputs to BALANCE the boat on the pad. There is great info on driving the chine on here and Youtube.6. (Auto) will allow the live wells to be filled by the pumps, and not allow water to enter the live well from the strainers. (Empty) will allow the Live wells to drain (On plane, or on the trailer). It will also allow water to enter the live wells thru the strainers while sitting still in the water. Basically: Auto will be used under normal live well use, to fill them with the pumps, or to keep them empty of water. Empty will be used for just that…Emptying the live wells.
One other possibility for the beep. Low voltage. Optis are particular about voltage. Trim motor pulls a bunch of power. If your battery is a bit old, OR if you have poor connections in the battery compartment, that will do it. I would first check and clean ALL wires on the cranking battery. Clean the ring connectors, and the battery post. A little dielectric grease to stave off corrosion wont hurt. Put the motor cable on FIRST. Then add the remainder of your connections starting with the one with the largest wire (probably going to dash) and working your way down. If you have wing-nuts, dont stop at finger tight. Mercs recommendation is a stainless nylock type nut torqued to 20 foot pounds, to ensure a solid connection. Many have complained about a single beep when first cranking (NOT the beep when you turn ignition on, but a single beep when you actually turn the key beyond the “on” position to “start”. This has, so far, always been the problem. Bad battery, too much crap connected to the cranking battery, or poor connections. Optimax requires 800CCA by itself. Tack on some 12″ sonars (up to 4) and you are pulling serious current. Many shoot for something in excess of 1000 CCA for that reason. There are other things that will cause a beep of course, and and a shop with a CDS will be able to tell you what alarms have been stored. But many have fought this low-voltage issue.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
