Topic: Power Trim Question

Went fishing today and when getting ready to trailer home I tilted my 2007 Merc 250 Pro XS on my 2007 Puma down into my motor toter and when it seated properly the tilt function just stopped working. All 4 tilt switches suddenly became inoperative. Motor switch, turn signal switch on the steering wheel, control handle switch, bow panel switches all stopped workng. Popped the motor cover and could hear the solenoids clicking but the trim motor would not engage. Trailered the boat home and figured Id manually release it and get it in the garage, etc. Lo and behold all was just fine when I got to the house. Happy it was but should this happen when Im on the water what should I be looking for. Appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

Bad spot on the tilt/trim motor brushes. Tap the tilt/trim motor with a hammer and bet it begins working. Or you can take it to your dealer and let them fix it!

If you have warranty we would have it checked as it sounds like the armature. They dont get better, they just dont find that spot every time. Just when insteps exactly right (wrong).

It could be a bad spot on the armature or a few other things..When it did this motor wouldnt run either way? Oyeah hitting the trim motor with a hammer isnt a very good idea either..

As mentioned above, dont hit it with a hammer. worn brushes will do what youre saying. Relays not making ground will also do what youre saying. When (not if) it happens, disconnect the trim motor wires (blue and green coming from trim motor) in the pan of the motor. Using jumpers, ground one and feed hot to the other and the motor should run. If it doesnt, problem is in the motor. To answer the question, yes (or no as the case may be) the motor did not move in either direction, up or down. I will check with my local wrench and have him check the trim motor. I do have warranty left until 2012 so I may be in luck and get a new one. Thanks for the quick help. Alan

I had a simular thing happen to me yesterday. Only thing is that mine would work going up but not down. Let in down manually and been working fine since.??? Is there anything I need to have done or just keep going. Anything but a hammer that is.Last edited by ShuCat on October 25th, 2010, 3:36 pm, edited 1 time in total.
