My basscat trailer has been locking up the brakes when i try to reverse. It does not happen all the time, when it does i try different thing to get it to work. I sometimes unplug trailer from car, or turn car off then turn back on. Eventually i get it to back up. Thought it was my truck but same thing happened using another truck. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!
It is either the reverse solenoid or the power from the reverse lights to it. The blue wire powers the solenoid.
Make sure your trailer harness is plugged all the way into your truck. This happened to a buddy of mine and we spent hours trying to figure it out why the brakes were locking up when in reverse till someone at the ramp notice the harness was not pushed all the way in. All the lights were working, too.God Bless, Stephen
It happens to me every once in a while as well. Drives me nuts.
Its probably the solenoid. My 09 trailer was doing the same thing, just acting up every once in a while, now it wont back up at all without using the “key” in the slot. Im pretty sure its the solenoid…going to get it replaced next Thursday. My 06 Cougar did the same thing after only about three months. I think BCB is getting some bad solenoids, or at least it seems they go out pretty often. Even my BayCat I had for less than a year, was beginning to do the same thing when I traded it.
Solenoids have been an off and on issue on disc brakes since they have been put on trailers. This is one of the reasons we still prefer drum brakes. The solenoid come preloaded in the coupler from UFP.
Check the connections. Ive backed Billius baycat all over the state of Texas and never noticed a thing. Thanks for the heads up though, we dip it in the salt regularly.

The last 7-8 months it never did it again.
I have add about everything you can have happen with this situation over the years of hauling a boat all over the US form one lake to another and it does drive you insane! More often than not, it is in your vehicle. (I know that you said it did it with another vehicle, but if you have the luck I have, it may have been the same problem on both vehicles…)Under the hood of your vehicle there is a fuse box. Check the fuses that have anything to do with lights. This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and on a Chevy, there is actually one that is labled “trailer back up”. 9 times out of 10, this is the problem. I have also had the connections on the wires corrode. This is normal as water, road grime, humidity, etc… will take its toll on metals in the wire and connectors that corrode. You connections may look fine, but give them a tug and see if they stay connected fine. My theory is that if they break in two when you tug, they were going to break soon anyways. Check your 5 to 7 way adapter that plugs into your vehicle. Sometimes if you plug the 5 pin connector from your boat trailer into that plug, one of the pins on the inside can break off into the adaptor. These are easy things to check and troubleshoot before replacing the solenoid. Ill bet it is not your solenoid. Good luck!
