My friend just bought an older, I think about an 1988 boat with a Mercury 150. Whats the compression supposed to be on this motor.
Good question. My first guess is somewhere between 125psi to 145psi if you are using a compression tester. But the best test is to just test all cylinders and if they are within 10% of each other, the motor is probably in good shape… If it is an XR4 those were pretty good motors.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
We dont remember the specs, though here is a site that a few good Merc Techs can help you on. A 1988 could be an XR-4, or a standard 2.5 block. http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=53 BCB
Actually I think it is a 2.4 block. But the XR4 motors really seemed to run well, and had a bit more “snarl” (exhaust note) to them than the XR6 (2.5 block) motors although the XR6 would probably run a tad faster.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
That old XR4 was pretty quick for its time. We had a mariner MagII on a Venture 17-v and it would flat out boogie. That was the boat I cut my teeth on driving a Pad Bottom. I think it was more like 1986 though when we had that one. It was a 70 mph boat which was very fast then, especially for a 150. Enough about the past. Point is as Oldtimer said, this was a very good motor at the time. 20 Years is a long life for an outboard, so make sure it is checked out good. On top of the compression check , Perform a leak down test as well!! Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
thanks for all the infor, it is indeed an xr-4 on a 17 1/2 procraft. I told him if it run that it should be a quick boat. I appreciate all the responses. happy trails
Make sure he checks under the deck. I had a 94 procraft and the stringers were rotted. Once the boats skeleton is shot, you might as well take it to the lake and sink it. And it certianly wouldnt be a good idea flying around at any speed.Last edited by john1112 on July 25th, 2008, 9:45 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I believe the pros only came with 10 year warranties back then, and most still today although I think their top-line models might be limited lifetime. They definitely had a lot of wood in em, and the interior plywood in the rear was sealed with a chopper gun so a good inspection would be worthwhile. Even remove the floor drain and see what can be seen/felt under there as well as that is often a moisture wick on a boat with plywood floors. If you could find someone that knows what the weight of the hull ought to be, that would be another good test to see if it had put on a little weight (or a lot) which can only come from water soaking in where it doesnt belong.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I had a 1987 Procraft 1780, and the listed hull weight for the boat was 1200 pounds, as best as I recall.
Ive not done it, but it would probably be a good idea when you buy a new boat, to fill the tanks, and drive it to a scale and weight the entire rig, trailer and all, but no tackle or extra junk aboard. Then if something ever seems to slow it down, another trip to the scale can show whether it has gained any weight or not. Dry hull weight is not so useful unless you can remove the motor and lift the boat off the trailer to weigh it as they do at drag races…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
