Jackplate Torque

I adjusted my jackplate last night and I am wondering what the proper torque for the side bolts is? It is a 6″ Slidemaster. I am guessing that they were at about 50 lbs because they moved a little with my torque wrench set a 55lbs. I found an earlier post that said 85 – 90lbs. I dont want to strip or break off the bolts, so what is the correct torque amount? BTW – My ETEC 150 HO was set 4.5″ below the pad, I am trying 4″. This seems a bit low to me from everything I have read of other setups. Is the Opti a shorter motor? Should I be 3.5″ to 3.75″ below the pad? At 4.5″ my water pressure was 18 to 20lbs. Thanks, Wayne

We have suggested from 80 to 90 pounds, and 65 to 90 is good.

short motor doesnt really mean anything when you discuss distance below the pad. that is the distance from the centerline of the propshaft to the bottom surface of the running pad. If you happen to buy a 25″ shaft motor, you will just have a lot of motor sticking up above the transom when you get it set at the right distance. The drag guys like to run 15″ midsections so that they dont have all that motor sticking up into the slipstream where it creates drag, so that even when they run even with the pad or higher, the motor is tucked down on the transom.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

I meant that the ETEC may have a longer mid section than the Opti. 4.5″ below the pad seems a bit much. I leveled the pad and then the cavitation plate. I measured the distance to the floor from both the pad (14.875) and the cavitation plate (10.375),and then subtracted (14.875 – 10.375 =4.5). We dont like to reference the pad distance as too many factors come into play on that making it an unrelative setting. We prefer to use a vertical transom height for references, which usually hover around 23 1/2″ to 24 1/4″ overall transom heights. The engine midsection is the same overall 20″ engine height as an Opti. The L series is the engine standard. No one in bass now runs a 25″ shaft unless they got a bargain. We did that in the late 90s prior to 20″ 250 engines, which drove Mercury to the 20″ 250 game. BCB

Im not sure if I understand your measurements exactly. Im sure you measured correctly, but hopefully you didnt mean that you were measuring from the pad to the cavitation plate. That is not correct, but I bet you did it correctly. Your previous post just sounded odd I thought. I would have expected a pad to propshaft measuerment. If your cavitation plate is 4.5″ below your pad, then your propshaft would be much lower – Right? Are we on the same page, or am just I confused about your measurements.
