Removing Old Registration Numbers

I didnt see this one in FAQ so Ill ask here. I bought my Pantera from a private party out of state so I have to remove the old registration numbers before putting on the new for NYS. Anyone have a recommendation? Im thinking of saturating the old numbers with WD-40 (works on adheasive used to hang signs in commercial buildings that are stuck to sheetrock). But if there is a better easier way, Im all ears. WD-40 can take a long time, requires a lot of rubbing/scrubbing, and can be messy.Thanks.

Try using a hair drier, fingernails and Goo-Gone. If that doesnt work there is always the good old 6″ Milwaukee Grinder. lol

WD-40 works well with no ill effects. And the hair drier will soften the glue some after it soaks. Enamel reducer cleans the residue and glue, then alcohol before reinstalling. Plastic putty knife or spreader for cleaning the vinyl saves the fingernails also. BCB

Thanks everyone. Never heard of Goo Gone, will keep an eye out for it if good ole WD-40 / hair dryer trick doesnt work. Thanks again.

Got them off tonight. Best tool, thumb/finger nail with WD-40. Boat not near power so no heat. Once you get enough of the number up so you could grip it, you could slowly peel them off. What a pain in the butt though. Glad its a one time thing!

After removing the numbers you can remove the remining glue residue with a quick wipe of acetone. Works like a charm. If you are putting new numbers on, go to a print shop/sign shop and they can do your new numbers on a vinyl transfer in a few styles and colors. With all the numbers and letters on one sheet, the spacing is perfect. You can also pick a letter styling, but dont get so fancy as to prevent the authorites to see them easily. I usually put mine below the rub rail.
