Hey guys, my tach has been broken on my 99 P3 for a while and everyone tells me its probably a voltage regulator and they are known to be problematic. The funny thing is it seems to be charging fine at 14 volts, but Ive heard that this can happen. Its new prop time and Id like to get the tach up and going again. Does anyone know where to find this thing (on the motor) and if it is a do it yourself test and replace? Times are tight and Id like to save some money if possible. We would have a competent tech tell you how to check the regulator, and some are inside the alternator on newer engines. It could just be in the wiring getting jostled around over time. The hope is that it is not the stator. That is a bit more?

The Optis do not have a stator and the regulator is built into the belt driven alternator. On a Opti the tach signal comes from the ECM/Crank Position sensor and so if starts and runs fine and is charging the battery chances are it has a broke wire or loose connection in the tach harness or a faulty tach…Sherm
