coupla battery questions

Hey folks – I need to put a new cranking battery in my Puma. I run a 225 Pro XS, so I assume I need 1000 MCA or better? I have 3 group 29 lead acid batteries for my trolling motor etc. Do I need the cranking battery to be the same group, or does size not matter here? Also, do they all need to be lead-acid or could the cranking battery be AGM? Thanks in advance for the wisdom!

Hard to answer. The optimax needs 800 CCA BY ITSELF to reliably crank. Motor has to spin three complete revolutions so that the compressor can build up enough pressure to light it off. If you hang 2-3-4 big sonar units, you probably want a bigger battery. A 12″ sonar that I helped a friend install was pulling over 5 amps when we turned it on. Two at the helm and two up front and you are talking serious current…In any case, bigger is better here if you run lots of electronics, plus a live well pump or two, plus a stereo, a garbage disposal, TV, coffee pot, etc. 2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

If your charger is AGM compatible you can mix battery types, and is common to do so. You should have at least 950 ccas for your Opti and accessories. Outboard and charger are two considerations when looking for a new battery, and some AGM chargers mate better with certain AGM batteries. Group 29 battery is the same size and capacity as group 31 (JCI sizes their battery with 29 instead of 31). A good quality 31 series battery is probably what you are after for cranking.

Follow-up question: if Im looking at a group 31, do they make cranking batteries that size or will it be a deep cycle battery that meets the CCA requirements? Locally I cant find anything bigger than a group 24 cranking battery, and I checked four stores in the Minneapolis area last week and didnt find anything bigger than a 27. I have a NOCO Genius charger that I put in last year…cant recall if it is compatible with AGM or no.Last edited by leechlakelargemouth on April 10th, 2017, 8:32 pm, edited 1 time in total.

After a ton of research last year, this is the one I decided on: https://www.batteriesplus.com/battery/m … li31agmdpmA bit of an expensive option, but a beast of a battery. It also has an incredible warranty. Just double check that your charger is capable of charging different types of batteries.

and to answer your follow up question, youll want a deep cycle that meets the CCA requirements so you can run your accessories all day.

The NOCO should handle the batteries. Get a battery with the most weight and it really is that simple, and AGM is better.
