First I have heard of anything like that. Good luck and I hope you get it fixed fairly painless. Judd Lasiter
Will tell you a little story about my 225 Pro XS and changing the lower unit grease. I do this myself !!! Did mine a few weeks ago. After doing so a few days later I changed the oil in my truck. I have a big pan I let all this stuff drip in and them pour it in a 5 gallon gas can to haul to the recycle shop. When pouring all the old grease and oil into this can I noticed something in the bottom of my pan. Picked it up and it was the seal that goes around the bottom screw of my lower unit. Good thing I never ran mine before noticing this or would have blown mine up also. Not saying this is what happened to yours but just wanted everybody to read. Take care and good luck Joey
I had one that failed on an 06 225 Pro XS that had the waterpump impellor cover improperly installed, allowing water to enter the gearcase and cause the s/s gears to gauld and eventually seize. In my case, the main drive shaft sheared off. When torn down it will be obvious if this is your problem, as there will not be any screws or evidence of them ever being installed (e.g. threaded holes still have paint). These gear cases are serialized by Mercury, so the assembly history is easily ascertained. Mercury over-nighted a new one once the tech tore it down and verified this condition. I was back in business within 24 hours. Thanks to mechanic Dan Bowman at Mungenast Yacht Club Marina! I had very few hours on mine, and it had never been serviced by anyone (dealer or me). Do you run a hot-foot? If so, that may be the contributing factor to your failure. The pros/cons have been addressed many time on this board and others… Get your Mercury mechanic on this ASAP and you should have a good outcome Gary Hollander
Gary I dont want to start something here, and Im new to this board. What are the cons to a hot foot? Just trying to get educated before I maybe make a mistake. Thanks

Thanks The con that Gary is referring too would be putting your foot on the hotfoot and giving it some gas as you shift into gear. You CANNOT shift from neutral unless you are idling or you take the risk of messing the gears up. That is a very small con in my opinion and common sense should prevail. Judd Lasiter
Implosion is often most common on boats with a hot foot. Your gearcase imploded and when the gears locked up they had to exit the scene. There have been a few limited failures and an occasional split prop shaft, though not many for the number of gearcases out there in TorqueMasters.
Im not going to get into a thing here, either. I asked if he was running a hot-foot, and pointed out that it “may be a contributing factor”. If you guys want to run a hot-foot, it is fine with me. I dont like them and find them to be uncomfortable. That is just my PERSONAL choice–I realize it is not the party line, but the guy was asking for help. My experience with the blown lower unit had nothing to do with a hot-foot, and that was what I shared with him first.Until the Mercury tech tears it down, it is purely speculation from all angles. I agree with Judd, that common sense should prevail–however, sometimes it doesnt…Im done,Gary Hollander
Thanks for the info. I do not have a hot foot. Im still arguing with my dealer about the situation they are trying to say I hit something. I know I did not and have several witnesses so we will have see how far this will go. I just hope it is fixed before the OI.
The dealer may have their hands held by the Warranty Desk. If you have a damaged propeller blade previously, or the case shows impacts or scratches, it may be hard depending on the extent. If the Warranty Desk is the issue, get the details and try bouncing it up hill. Mercury Service will be here also next week. Though the history and details will matter.
I just have a quick question. I have a 225 pro xs Sunday at the MO. TBF tournament at Lake of the ozarks the lower unit blew up. I didnt hit anything and I serviced the unit the night before and checked it before I launched for leaks. We just got on plane and it was like you hit the kill switch. When we loaded out it had blown out the side of the lower unit and had torn part of the stag off. Has anybody had any problems like this with a 06 225 proxs?
Give that Trophy a spin and see how it functions. Otherwise we would look at a 26 or 27 Fury depending on how heavy you roll.
