Got a 15 Cougar FTD, 250 ProXs. I seem to have some slack/slop in the steering wheel. Is there any adjustment with the Sea Star steering mechanism to tighten up somewhat? It drive great but the slack is just something I did not have in my previous Cat so it does feel somewhat odd. Thanks
sounds like it needs to be bleed. call 1-217-324-9400. they should be able to help if your answer is delayed here.
I have a 2014 Puma and have always felt there was a bit of mechanical slack in the steering. Can there be a mechanical adjustment between the steering wheel and the hydraulics?

I understand what you mean but the only real maintenance that you can perform is to “bleed the system” to remove air which will improve the feel and performance of your steering. This is a two-man job that either requires a “professional” to perform or you can do it yourself providing you are mechanically inclined. Its your choice but it sounds like you should have it done for sure. After I did mine, the difference was noticeable and was well worth my time. Everyone should believe in something. I believe Ill just go fishing!
There are 4 areas to question.1. The tilt wheel mechanism on the top part of the steering helm. 2. The nuts that retain the cylinders on the steering tube itself. 3. The system could have a small leak and be spongy because of the air in the hoses or cylinder compressing. 4. The mounting to the engine itself and the bolts on the steering arm.
Definitely sounds like air in the system . — I made my own bleeder from some clear tubing , a couple of oil bottles , and a funnel . — What Ive found with this system is that if it has air in it , the steering will feel what I call ” hinky ” , meaning it has a bit of chatter in the wheel as you turn it . — Ive found that if you turn the wheel lock to lock a few times it will help with the ” feel ” temporarily , but you still need to bleed the system . — Check the ends of the ram for leakage , as this is the most common problem Ive seen with this system . — Rebuild kit for the ram is about 100 bucks , and it takes about 2 hours to get it rebuilt and bled out . — However you deal with this problem , get it done A.S.A.P. !!!!!! — The last thing you want is to do is lose your steering . — Hoss
Some dealers have a power bleeding system that works great and is pretty fast. Had it done on mine a couple years ago and made a huge difference. They add lines to the front and back that feeds in fluid and removes air. Well worth it. Paul can chime in with more details on how it works.
Thanks Guys…..great advice. I will get it checked out ASAP.
Since its a 2015 then you definitely should let your dealership look at it. If someone has excess travel in the steering then they should have it inspected in any of these circumstances.

As it turns out the slack was not in the Sea Star but in the installation of the tilt wheel. I rolled the rubber boot up and tightened specific bolts that held the unit in place. This fixed the problem. Thanks for all the advice guys and thanks for the great one on one phone support. That is why I keep running Bass Cat boats.
