Hey guys, my youngest daughter is 10 and wants to start fishing more with me. Does anyone know of a good closed face reel that is pretty smooth casting and reeling? She dont like a spinning reel and a baitcaster is out of the question for now. I bought her 2 of the Zebco 33s and they are terrible. The line hangs up in the spool and reeling is tough. I love that she wants to spend more time with me on the water so I want to get her a rod and reel that will be enjoyable for her to fish with. Thanks
There are a few “good” spincast reels. I have always like the Diawa Silvercast reels and the Abumatics, both are reels that should last years and years!Good Luck!James

I know that you said a baitcaster is out of the question but you might rethink that. I went down the road with the Zebco 33s and 202s and a Shakespear close faced reel as well and they proved to be more frustrating than helpful. I had a friend that was upgrading to some newer reels and was selling some very well taken care of Shimano Curados and Calcuttas. I got bought a few of them, cleaned them up really good according to the Shimano reel cleaning videos on Youtube and gave my son one. It took about thirty minutes in the back yard to learn how to throw it and then we went fishing a couple of times with my partner where he ran the boat and I could work with my son on casting. After that he has had no problems with a baitcaster. He was seven years old at the time and has not looked back since. He started on a Calcutta 100 which is small and will fit in his hand well. He now has two Calcutta 100s and a Curado 100, all used of course. I have found a good reel will spool off line much better than a cheap one so you might be much better off getting a little better equipment. Here is Clayton with his Curado. Whatever you do keep taking her!Mike
The Zebco Rhino reels performed well for my son when he was 4 to 5. That was 12 years ago and my sisters granddaughter is still using it. The 733 by Zebco is also tough. But dont skimp on price. Nothing like a equipment malfunction to ruin a kids day on the lake. They are worth the investment.
