The caps are rear mounted and it sounds like something might have happened as they are inserted into the wheel before the wheel is mounted. the center bearing buddies are seldom an issue and definitely not in symmetry on different sides on the same trip. One side at a time, we say sure, two sides on the same trip, something is up! It could be that the brake coupler locked up and overheated the calipers and disc, which blew the grease caps and they took out the hub. It is not hub related, though the hubs could be a casualty of the coupler.
