Son bugged me to lets hit Lay Lake after the morning storms passed. Weather forecast looked good for the afternoon. Cloudy. Mild wind. Right. Turned out to be sun/clouds alternating, 25-30 mph gale force winds, waves 2-3 in most parts of the river. Tried fishing on the main channel, got tired of waves breaking over the bow. Trolling motor was yanked out of the water so many times then slammed back in, broke the H-bird TM transducer bracket (which thankfully Academy had handy – bass pro is a 20 mile drive). About the roughest I recall seeing Lay except in the middle of a major thunderstorm on the few occasions we have been caught out there. Im beginning to think that degrees in meteorology are pretty easy to come by compared to degrees in computer science and such…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Only job I know where you can lie, and be wrong most of the time and still keep your job and get a paycheck! LOL!
I always said weather is the only other job besides baseball where hitting .300 is considered a success….Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
We went back out yesterday. Had a long run vs a phoenix 721 with 250. We were about 3mph faster and ran away from him. But with a load that normally runs 75, was only seeing 72. Thought at first, OK, it is approaching 85 so maybe thats it. Once we got up to the Islands above the steam plant, my son immediately complained “can you slow down, I dont have time to cast down a dock and then retrieve?” I looked down and we were dead-drifting at 1.8-1.9mph GPS. Current was MOVING. Our run against the phoenix was up-river into a nearly 2mph current, and a 10mph wind which later changed to come from the other direction. Waves were minimal however. Guess most everyone in central Alabama suddenly turned their A/C on based on the current. Apparently they had Lay dam (and probably Logan Martin) running wide-open. Son suggested “lets fish up-stream and go back over the same mile of docks.” Had to run my Maxxum 80 at 100% and we were making about 1/2 mph progress at best with wind and current in our faces. But no water over the bow so I probably should not complain. Also pulled a 6 lb 4 oz bass out of a small cluster of stumps. Using 10 lb test line and of course he heads down-river. I dont recall seeing that kind of current on Lay, ever. Of course the previous day saw a BUNCH of rain, so they might have been running with flood gates open or partially open as well since things have not been dry the last month or two. Looks like they are running wide open again today.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Pulling water in preparation for the storms that are here.
might well have been. Claimed to also be running 6 turbines at something north of 35,000 cubic feet per second generating. (1-800-lakes11, coosa river, lay dam).Probably should have let my son and dog out and made a run downstream to set a new personal best of close to 80 if not breaking it. Best run so far has been 78.5 one direction, minimal current. Best two way average (not that day, some jet skis prevented any run back up the river) was 77. Think it might have touched 80 with that 1.8-1.9 current and the original 10mph down-river wind. Probably NOT going tomorrow as the river was an obstacle course yesterday with the following floating downstream; (1) sunken boat hull, looked to be 22 or so, cabin-style boat, probably had been sitting shallow somewhere for years; (2) multiple logs including one that appeared to be a 30 or so light pole; (3) one 5-6 long steel tank that looked like either an O2 or Acetylene welders tank. Any of which would have claimed a lower unit if hit no doubt; (4) one huge clump of weeds, leaves and such that reminded me of some of the floating vegetation islands on the big O in Florida. One thing they didnt do is lower the water. When I checked it was at 395.8 or so, which is full pool at Lay.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
