BCB: 2006 Pantera IV Trailer

Question: I asked about this before. After unloading the boat again this weekend I took a closer look at my trailer where my left rear back tire is angled out past the one in front of it. I looked closer at the inside framing this time. I found the the plate that the hub attaches too is cracked and bent out.. I will try to take some pictures tonight with the digital and forward. Im wondering can it be welded or should that whole axle be replaced?

One axle is a tad longer. Though the crack and caster/camber is a concern.

Didint get the piuctures taken last night. Watching my 2 yr old grandson. BCB I wouldnt have thought much of the chamfer but the amount the tire stuck out kept getting farther and everyone that saw it was asking me if something was wrong. Then a friend took a closer look and found the plate cracked and bent out. Hopefully Ill get a chance tonight to take pictures if I can get away from the grandson long enough. Hes only two and hes already named me papa basscat. I go near the boat and he wants to be there.

Service should have them in the morning. They will confer with the trailer shop and look for some suggestions. They may be able to diagnose the issue, though doubtful. The most common issue we see on bent axles is drive through windows, theyre just too narrow. BCB

BCB rained all weekend so couldnt get any better pics. A couple of questions I need answered: 1. Is there anything I need to be aware off when welding on this plate? 2. Can the boat be lifted off the trailer with straps. I have access to our local steel mill and they have all kinds of welders and heavy lift cranes. I am looking at lifting the boat off the trailer, then having one of their welders pull the trailer in the shop and weld cross member back to the plate.

That is acceptable and that can be done without dis-assembly of the end unit. Though welding should be done with rotation to prevent pulling. If the end is cracked loose, it may require some straightening first. The welding does not need to build up heat, and rotating around the opposing sides prevents the welding from pulling the end unit on an angle. And this does happen welding. Removing the brake caliper should accomplish all the parts breakdown you would need. The end unit is welded into the axle on a pin weld, which can bee seen on opposing sides of the axle. The 2″ tube is drilled on two sides, and the spindle it safety pin welded in that hole to prevent failure and loss of the end unit. BCB
