Alright you Etec gurus, is this the oil recommended to use in the 250 HO? “Evinrude E-Tec XD 100 2-Cycle Outboard Motor Oil” This stuff is kinda pricy and was just wondering if there are others that can be used.Last edited by bcjigginjoe on January 28th, 2009, 4:04 am, edited 2 times in total.
bcjigginjoe If youre 250HO was programmed for the XD 100 oil, then that is the only oil that can be run in it (except in emergencies – see youre engine manual). The XD 100 is a special synthetic oil and when the engine is programmed for it, oil consumption is cut by nearly half. Less oil consumption results in less smoke, less plug fouling and less emissions. I have been running it in my 2008 225HO for a year and a half, since new. It is expensive, but consumption is half so it is not as bad as it seems. Thanks Eugene
I would contact your dealer about bulk purchase- I believe there are 25 gallon sources they can get their hands on. I know a number of folks that purchased 50 gallon sources. Pricing on this product seems to vary wildly based on location in U.S.. Id shop it. I have a huge evinrude engine repair dealership and the bulk pricing is good. I wouldnt dream of going into a retail store and buying the pre-packaged 1 gallon jugs for the amount I and probably you use. Regarding the cost differential- usually consumption is dropped enough by using xd 100 that shifting to xd 50 to save money is not a savings- usually a wash if the prices are competitive as the motor will use more xd 50 than 100 and you have to decarb at some point likely with xd 50. I believe that the original programs for xd 100 were more lean than now but still it will run more lean on xd 100. I would call up Brannon in Wisconsin and remind him of how cold and boring it is right now up there and get him to give you a “BassCat Family Member Price” on some bulk xd 100. Heck in Houston there should be some competitive sources for bulk xd 100. If you cant get what you want there I am sure the folks at Rockwall can help as well. I like xd100 so much I kicked my 04 200 HO DI(non etec) to the stuff. ABSOLUTELY no smoke- heck unlike most of the other brands where you have to rub the transom like heck at the end of the day to get the smoke lines off of motor and boat- there isnt any. Even the exhaust through the prop is clean in mine.C.O.D. Jr. III
The newer engines come programmed for XD 50 and you can run XD 100 in those. Though the XD50 is fine. The XD 100 is pricey and it does burn a little more oil. The engines should be checked on older ones to make sure that they are programmed for XD50. All 2009 stuff is supposed to be XD50. BCB
Thanks Guys, Think I will make sure that mine is programmed for the XD 100 and run this oil. I like the sound of the clean burn, no smoke, less plug fouling, etc. I did find it on the net for around $30 a gallon when purchasing a case, which is 6 gallons. Maybe take Wards advice and get with my dealer and check out bulk prices, which may bring the cost per gallon down more. I was just taken back a little when I found out how much this synthetic stuff costs, but if the engine burns less oil, and burns it cleaner, then it may be the way to go.
I have an 07 ETEC 225HO. It is programmed per direction and guidance with the TCWIII setting. My dealer highly recommended the TCW III setting and I took his advice. Later, it was mandated that all 225HOs be programmed wtih TCWIII setting. I use ONLY XD100! It has so many benefits, not the least of which is NO DECARB necessary. It is a few dollars more, but even at the TCWIII setting this engine is very stingy on oil. Please DO NOT use the XD100 setting….the HOs just arent desired to use it. We run the HOs too hard on our bass boats. The regular ETECs are ok with this, but not the HO.
As usual I was wrong and BCB and Dan are correct! Initial xd 100 setting was revised- ran it by local BRP rep who reflected BRPs desire to run a little more oil through system than before. Agree with Dan though- I have run 50 and 100 through my DI and while the 50 is still very clean its nice to not worry about decarbing the thing once a year. My dealer should be up to speed on this, but just so I got it straight, is the TCWIII setting and the HD 50 setting the same? Im just trying to get the thing set up for the best performance and maintenance. Thanks again, Im learning.
Ok Pre 2008 HO E-TECs the dealer had the choice to run 2 OIL SETTINGs, call them 1-lean and 2-rich, well they were not getting the oil needed especially on cylinder #2, so for 2008 all HO evinrudes are set on the “rich” setting……Now before anyone says anything negative on this setting using the Incredible XD-100 you will still use less oil than Mercs Optimax and considerably less than Yamahas HPDIs……I actually use XD-100 in my 1982 Johnson V4 140 Xflow, i noticed after 2 days that I had no soot or black where my exhaust exits up top and my prop was shiny and clean, see some motors need to be decarbed after so many hours, not with XD-100, if you use it in any carbed 2 stroke mix it still as recommended, De carbon the motor with your favorite product, I like the OMC one because we sell it and its cheap, then start the XD 100 process, my motor smokes so little youd think it was more moders, runs like a scalded dog, and my pistons and cylinders are clean as a whistle, where when I bought it they thought wed have to put new rings etc in because of the carbon……But after hijacking that, the HOs run best with XD100 and their is no more problems, actually since the New lighting gear case came out and the new oiling the HO E-TECs have been the most reliable in its class according to consumers,dealers…..Others are having electrical problems, cylinder #5 issues, and other gremlins that are rarely talked about, but hey we are in the high performance industry and maintenance and warranty claims are part of the game…I just hope that the Doubters and bad talkers give the E-TEC the credit it deserves for being 1 of the most High TEch and Easiest motors to own, and that is true…..Good dayYour Signature …
