Topic: which ram mount for helix 12 on 2012 PII

Hi everyone. I have a 2012 Pantera II and just ordered a Humminbird Helix 12 Mega SI Chirp G2. I am leaning towards a Ram mount but most I see advertised have the short arm. Is that adequate or do I need a longer arm to mount it to the gunnel, outboard of my drivers console. Feel free to recommend a different mounting system or location. Also, I have broken 3 transom mounted transducers since I bought the boat (I fish Lake Fork). Can anyone recommend a shield or other way to protect the transducer from stumps without diminishing its effectiveness? Thanks in advance.

I appreciate everyone who has viewed my post. I had hoped to be able to do the install myself but not knowing what arm to buy or where to mount it, I called my BassCat dealer and scheduled a date to install the graph. It will take longer but they will do it properly.

I would go with a precision sonar mount. Or something similar. That 12 is a huge unit. In rough water the ram is gonna have movement and make it hard to see your map. I also like my graphs front and center.

On the transducer call Basscat and buy the transducer saver. It is worth every penny(I fish Palestine). This is what I put together for my p2. If you would like something similar I will be at fork Friday looking for some fat girls and can let you check it out.

x2 on what Toadrustler said above about Precision sonar. Im getting ready to purchase one to move my HDS-12 from the gunnel to the console. If you decide to get a ram style mount I would look at Balzout mounts. Much more sturdy that the ram mounts and I believe the owner of Balzout has a basscat. It uses the same base mount bolt configuration as the ram mounts too so it was an easy swap for me. Ill be moving my Balzout mount to the front deck and getting rid of my ram mount when the Precision sonar mount arrives.http://www.balzoutllc.com/
