Second day out on the lake, in a tourney, my just recently purchased used cat — big motor would not start. Would crank just fine. Noticed when key was turned one click, smart gages would not light up, beep or anything. Second click to the right, motor would crank fine but no ignition?? Dropped trolling motor and finished tourney… After I got home, I took a look under dash and noticed that the wire harness that comes out of the key housing has been twisted very, very tightly, several times, because of maybe the lock nut on the key housing assembly being loose before I got the boat? I am guessing, from turning the key?? I also found the housing locknut only finger tight. Removed all the key housing hardware and pushing it through the dash and un-wound the harness to be more normal. I looked at all the environmental splices and all looked good. Back of potted ignition switch looked great. I then put the key in and clicked it once…. smart gages worked… I wiggled all the wires and splices and could not get the problem to come back. Anyone know what wire I should be looking at more closely?? The wire that would render the smart gages inoperative but still allow the big motor to crank.yellow with red stripe black purple black with yellow stripe yellow with black stripe red Thanks for any troubleshooting tips… Last edited by basscatsmeow on April 14th, 2008, 7:17 pm, edited 2 times in total.
I dont want to insult you at all, but did you check to make sure your kill switch wasnt pulled. It sounds like you may have more than that going on, but just wanted to check. Hope you get it figured out. I hate electrical issues. KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
kill switch was checked. batteries were checked. still same problem. problem went away when i dropped the ignition switch housing out of the dash and untwisted the severely twisted harness… there are several environmental splices there. i do not want to change them all… i think prevously, the ignition key has been turned in circles, and the key housing assembly was being turned as well. that may have damaged a splice or wire in the harness.Last edited by basscatsmeow on April 14th, 2008, 3:04 am, edited 1 time in total.
Something is going on with getting fire and the kill switch is something I would look at. With all those wires twisted tight its no telling what might have been pulled tight and out their splice.
We would probably opt for a spliced in Ignition switch to prevent a future issue, if that is the issue you found from the diagnosis you have given.
The ignition switch has nothing at all to do with the SmartCraft gauges apart from giving the “Run” power to the engine. The SmartCraft gauges are 100% totally and completely powered through the CAN harness to the engine under the cowl and no local or boat harness power is used at all. So with all that you described, with the engine not starting or running and all, it sounds like the engine “Run” wire was pulled or shorted where it wouldnt let the engine have power; the same wire that drops when you switch the key from “Run” to “Off”. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps. DekeDeke
Thanks guys. I know it sounds like the kill switch, but i do not think that is it. With my kill switch “on” or “off”, turning key to the right one click, smart gages will come on. Yesterday they would not. What color is the engine “run” wire coming out of the key switch housing? I wish i had a wire diagram…. I would say maybe the ignition switch could be bad, but i think it is in one of the wire splices that had all the tension on it.
If you will send me your email address, I will scan the ignition system to a PDF file for you from my Optimax manuel and send to you
Thanks JW, email sent your way.
Thank you Thomas, for sending the print. I will get my Fluke out and do some continuity checks on the Commander 2000 key switch. If anyone is interested, here is what the continuity readings should be on the wires coming out of the ignition switch. I will be looking closely at the red and purple wires.Off – BLK and BLK/YELRun – RED and PURStart – RED and YEL/RED, YEL/RED and PUR, RED and PUR Choke – RED and YEL/BLK, RED and PUR, PUR and YEL/BLK
