Hummingbird 788c problem

My 788c fish finder will work for about 15 minutes then it will show 2.4 feet and not pick up the bottom. I shut it down and it will come back to reading correctly. Has anyone else have this problem. I have searched and read through the manual and have found nothing. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks,Steve

Steve, 99% certain you have a failing transducer. Had exactly the same problem on my 3 year old 788 CI on my pontoon this year. Did exactly what you described, and the only fix is to install a new transducer. Mike Whitten

Mine did this once. I restored defaults, updated the software, and it was fixed. If your software is current, I would try resoring defaults to see if that helps.

I agree with Mike. Transducers can cause all sorts of stupid problems.

Updating if you units do Ethernet is a very good idea. If your networking units it can cause other issues. We suggest you contact Humminbird on their 800 line if you have further problems.

Steven,Before you purchase a new transducer, try to restore the default settings (you will lose your saved settings) and update the software in the unit (as suggested). This fixes a lot of the depth reading problems. If that fails, the transducer may be the ticket but I would definitely call Humminbirds consumer line first for their suggestions/recommendations (800-633-1468). Thanks for all the advice. I have restored all the defaults and updated the software. I am going fishing in the morning rain or shine. Will let yall know the results.-Steven

After the update and restoring the defaults it was still intermittent. I havent checked the transducer yet. It is the hull-inlayed transducer, if it is bad. Is there a way to replace that transducer? I am going to upgrade the front graph anyway and run it on the TM, but Id still like to have the option to run the hull transducer.I only got to run it a few hours becuase it rained a monsoon on me saturday and sunday.-Steven

Well, after talking to hummingbird for an hour and trouble shooting all the way up to the transducer like everyone suggested. Come to find out the transducer had been bouncing around in the hull the whole time. I didnt know where the transducer was because I have a spare prop holder mounted between the batteries in the bilge area. So I removed the prop holder and there it was. I grabbed the transducer and it was free. I took some pics and hopefully nothing is damaged.
