I had a previous boat that Id upgraded the stock head unit and 6.5″ speakers with a Sony Marine unit and Infinity Marine 6.5″ speakers for just over $200. The sound was phenomenal! Im looking to do the same with my new-to-me 2011 Puma. Im looking at this head unit from Sony: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SC … PDKIKX0DERIm looking at these 6x9s from Infinity as they are supposed to be a bit better than their 6.5″s:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S5 … HUSDHDORFFIf the 6x9s wont work in the traditional gunnel mounting locations for this boat, then Ill go with these Infinity 6.5″ Marine speakers:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PA … MCZ4O2P52ZThanks in advance for any advice and input… -Shawn

scott martin recently posted his stereo addition on his youtube page. Never had a boat with music in it but ive been considering it lately. Just more wires to run and power to suck away at my cranking battery
I install the system that intergrates with my HDS units. I believe it is called sonic hub. Speakers were mounted in gunnel i dont remember speaker size. You might consider that option if you our running lowrance units sound quality is awesome and price comparable. Ill Send pic if you would like to see them. Good luck.Bigal
Im running HDS gen 1 units on it right now (What it came with). Im not sure if that is compatible… Plus, the Sony unit puts down some really clean high power signal – bridgeable to something like 65 watts to two channels (Left and Right 6×9 in my case). My installer didnt think that the power draw would be any worse than one of my Lowrance units – I specifically asked if we should run a second, smaller battery for it. I just put in a mack daddy starter battery with a 3 year unconditional warranty, so Im not sweating it.
Yeah, I saw the Scott Martin vid. Im not putting in anything remotely as exciting as what his sponsors put in his rig!
Sonic Hub is compatible with HDS Gen1
Battery draw is an area you have to be concern with especially with hds units. I certainly understand whatin something with more power. Dont know that they make anything that would work for your application but just installed a system from probox on a polrais rzr 1000 waterproof and quality amazing. Expensive through. Good luck
I know its nice to have a big expensive stereo setup but for what its worth why dont you just put in a single speaker with Bluetooth and connect to your phone. You can play your songs that are downloaded to your phone, Sirius/XM, Pandora, etc and it is much less expensive. Plus you dont have to worry about anyone stealing anything. I bought a waterproof speaker that was advertised for the shower with a suction cup and it works great…when I use it. I have found that I just dont turn on the radio when Im fishing. I like to hear all the sounds going on around me.2017 Eyra / 250 Merc Pro XS
Well, those infinity 6x9s did fit in the gunnels of my 2011 BassCat Puma… Even better, they sound fantastic with that headunit! texlacat, I tried the Bluetooth speaker thing, but it is a PITA, and I dont think the fish hear it near as well as the higher dollar setup… ;^)
Squirrel, the install looks good. How does it sound?2017 Eyra / 250 Merc Pro XS
texlacat, It sounds kinda mind blowing actually. Im pretty sure you could put mediocre speakers into the gunnels of most boats and it would sound good – I.e. the cavity achieves good resonance like a quality speaker box. Ran it back to the installer this morning to change the power lead from the ignition circuit to the console power switch panel as I dont normally leave the ignition in the on position when I stop at a spot to fish. Both the installer and the sales lead/manager were out there chatting with me while the installer re-wired the main power lead… Both commented on how good that setup sounded. Since they are located in a sort of light industrial area, we got a chance to crank it to 11 (No neighbors around to annoy). Sounds phenomenal for what little money I put into it…Hell, I think the installation cost more than the components, but it was definitely worth it. The installation tech said it took him 20 minutes per hole – cutting the speaker holes out on each side. The fiberglass cutouts were surprisingly thick! Almost 2 inches of material with some sort of resin in between (Rubbery material). BCB doesnt skimp on the hull layup thats for sure!
