steering has some play in my 2004 cougar

Hey guy, I have a 2004 cougar with hydraulic steering. I have noticed it is beginning to get a little bit of play in the steering. I would like to know to bleed the lines and/or fill the lines. I would like to see if I can get this play out of my steering. Other than that I am pretty pleased with my cat this season. Just got through replacing the water pump impeller and the lower unit gear oil. should have replaced the seal to, noticed a little water in the oil when I drained it. Oh well, its not a hard job, so will pull it back off and replace after the fishing trip this weekend at Lake Texhoma.Thanks guys any information will help get me going in the right direction.

Check the fittings and seals for a leak. There must be one or there is wear if it is loose.

Thanks, I will check them. If there is a leak, is it an easy fix, or will i need to take in to the repair shop to be fixed?

There is no standard answer. We always lean to a qualified technician.

Is it play in the actual hydraulics or is is about 1-1.5 inches of play in the steering wheel before it start to turn the motor? I know on my 06 P4 i had some play in my wheel as well, though this was a different steering wheel with the tilt helm (not sure what you have) I had to take the wheel off and tighten down the bolts that held the steering colum. Might be worth taking a look at before looking at the hydraulic system. If all is tight there check out the manual… look at page 48- http://teleflexmarine.com/wp-content/up … tboard.pdf

Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left until it stops then force it a little further. Turn the wheel the other direction and repeat. This should tighten it up a little bit. Repeat as necessary.

JSLAW, after reading your post, it is more like you described. There is about 1-1.5 inches of playing the wheel before the motor begins to turn. I will check out the link you provided and check to see if the wheel is tight. I do have the steering wheel with the tilt helm. Thanks for the replies, Ill let you know what I find out.

If your seastar hydraulic tube in the back is like my 09 puma ftd turning all the way one way and then a little further will not bleed air from the lines. I was told the same but when I called teleflex and talked to technician the valve stems on the tube do not work that way. They will not let air out unless there are loosened first as in the diagram on page 48.I think likely Jslaw is on the right track.C.O.D. Jr. III

The system has been improved greatly through the years. Good luck!

Yeah take a look at page 6 figure four of the manual i linked earlier these carriage bolts are the ones im refering to. They are a bit of a pain to access though once tight everything was back to normal. Good luck let us know what you find.
