Question to all you archery people. Have a 9 yr old grand daughter who wants to learn archery, Im a long gun person have been teaching her to respect guns the right way to handle and shoot. When comes to archery I would like her to learn the right way with the right equipment. Need some guidance in right direction, I know this is a good and upcoming sport I might even join her in this journey Thanks in advance
If Clint comes along, CT58, Im sure he could be of help. He coaches youth archery.
Both my 11 yr old and 7 yr old girls shoot with me. They love to sling arrows with me. I got them the cheap bows that you can find at wakmart or Bass pro. My suggestion is to take these bows and add a little money and put whisker biscuits on them along with making sure they have knocks and maybe peep site on the string so that the arrow is placed in same place everytime. The main thing about archery is repeating the same hold and placement every shot. Let them sling many arrows and it will come to the point where they start getting more interested or disgusted that they arent hitting the bulls eye. Then they will be more apt to listen and want to learn how be consistent. This is where having the arrow rest, knocks on string and maybe a peep site will move them into being good arrow slingers. This is just my personal opinion.
I have been involved in all aspects of Archery for over 45 years. I have coached, been on shooting staffs, Corporate Advisory staff, and worked many consumer and trade shows, but Hunting has always been my first love. My advice is to get her to a good Pro Shop with someone that really knows their stuff. Get her fit right and with good equipment set up to shoot the right way. If she is not fitted properly she will more than likely not advance correctly and lose interest. There are a lot of knowledgeable archery people but there are also those who could not set anyone up correctly. I have seen a lot in the years I have worked shooting trailers and operated a Pro Shop. Be sure her draw length is correct, if anything cheat toward being a little short rather than too long. Also be sure the weight is easily handled, not just something she can handle but not for any length of time without fatigue setting in.DanLast edited by MeanV2 on October 16th, 2014, 1:28 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I would take a look at the Genesis bows. They are infinitely adjustable, and will grow with the archer. Its also a decent quality bow and you can get it in a kit.
Look up NASP and see if it is offered in your community. National Archery in the Schools Program. If your school is in NASP they will supply bows ans arrows. It starts in 4th grade sometimes 3rd through the schools. I started my daughter when she was 10. It is a great experience. The bows are Genesis Original bows by Mathews. 10-20 pound draw 0% letoff. They shoot bare bone, no sights, no releases. One of the cool things is that from 4th grade to 12th they shoot the exact same equipment so one bow could last all 8 years or they keep good resale value because kids are always coming into the program. Our group of 4th and 5th graders got 6th place in the nation after only shooting 2 years! Here is about the best price for new equipment, everything to get started, http://www.genesis-outlet.com/Tmnt_Kit.htmlHere are a few pictures. My daughter at 11yrs and a boy on our team with great form. He is like a statue. Two 11 year olds target from 15 meters!PM if you have questions and Ill try to help,Clint
