Pretty excited about going to Lake Guntersville oct 10-13th. Havent been fishing but about a year and havent been anywhere but local lakes. Still chasing that 6+ lber, and hoping the 6 hour trip to Guntersville will payoff. Was wondering if any could give a rookie some tips on what to fish out there. Id appreciate any advise.
If the grass mats are “right” theyll look like burnt pizza cheese. Heavy rod, heavy braid and frogs. When those mats get heated up youll hear the bream popping. If you can afford for 4 hours with a guide as soon as you get there youll be way ahead of the game.I think JohnM is headed there next week and he may chime into this post.
Im going down the 10th myself, plan on being there with a small group of guys until the 14th. My wife is going to join me on Friday night. We have got together with this group on Guntersville for over a decade. The report I got today was the grass bite was tough but the signs were there for it to break loose anytime. If you are staying near Scottsboro or Goose Pond and see a dark gray Cougar with a 225 Merc make sure and say hello. If I am on them Ill be glad to share info. The deal I am fishing is for ribbing rights only My best down there to date is a 9 with several 6+. A six is a reasonable goal.
Im going with a friend of mine thats been there once with a guide. Were staying at a place called Bucks pocket state park.
I had to map that, looks like its in the back of S Saulty. Thats a great creek to land your big fish! Ive not been down there to look at the grass this summer but that creek can get plenty of it in there. It also has at least one good road bed that I know of. We stay on the opposite side of the lake and dont normally go as far back in S Saulty as you guys are staying. I have been known to fish the outside areas of that creek. Drop me a message here with the kind of boat you are going to be in and Ill keep an eye out for you. WMI.org (the bass fishing home page) has a fishing reports area where a few of the guides post fishing reports for Guntersville. http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/reports/alabama/index.html
Thanks John. Unfortunately well be in his Triton. 250 xs.
Just understand that Bucks Pocket itself does not have lake access…you have to drive 7 miles to the boat launch on South Sauty. The creek in Bucks Pocket is usually VERY low this time of year, and never navigable in anything other than a canoe or kayak. Bucks Pocket is actually down in a gorge/canyon. Its a beautiful place, but the road going down into the park itself is very curvy for its short distance. Pulling a 21 foot boat up and down that little road could be a bit tricky. The campgroud is pretty decent, though last time I was there for the day, the bathhouses could have used a bit of work. It is a secluded area…you have to want to get there, as its “out in the country”.If your primary goal is fishing, and convenience to a boat launch area, you might want to consider another location in the area. Goosepond is located near Scottsboro on North Sauty Creek, has nice campgrounds and cabins for rent. Most of the cabins have piers, so you dont have to launch and pull out every day. The campground has communtiy piers. There is an excellent boat launch area there, and the fishing it that area is excellent, even if you dont get out on the main river channel and just fish the creeks.Guntersville State Park is another excellent location, with a huge campground area, recently remodeled because of tornado damage a few years ago. There are cabins, chalets, and a lodge there, plus a couple of boat ramps. Part of the park is located on Town Creek, which also has primitive camping areas. There is a restaurant in the lodge and a small gas station at the entrance to the main park area with basic necessities.Just food for thought. I have never actually driven to the boat launch area from Bucks Pocket, but if I was going to Guntersville to fish, I would personally choose another area for base camp.2017 Sabre FTD AE DC2017 Yamaha 175 SHOMK Fortrex 80Helix 10 Mega SI in consoleHelix 7 GPS SI GN2 on bow
Thanks Midnight, Im actually going with a new neighbor that Ive fished with a couple of times over the summer. He invited me to go with him and so i agreed. When he first described the place we were sleeping, I got a visual of a old bus…..lol, so Im ready for whatever!!?? I figured I can endure whatever, long as I got to fish on Guntersville. Now, the next time I go, might be a little different, lol, but Im splitting expenses and going along for the ride on this one….lol
Well, just have a good time, thats the main thing. Guntersville is about my favorite lake in Alabama, both because the fishing is so good and the fact that its also a pretty lake.2017 Sabre FTD AE DC2017 Yamaha 175 SHOMK Fortrex 80Helix 10 Mega SI in consoleHelix 7 GPS SI GN2 on bow
From what Grr884 stated and what Ive been Youtubing. Heavy braid is a must for the grass mats. This is new to me. I have on rod rigged with 55lb braid I keep a A rig tied on with, and I actually hate throwing that stuff. What kind of line/braid do yall guys use. Im planning to re-rig one of my heavy rods specifically for the frog fishing on this grassy areas Im hearing is so good this time of year.Is braid a must? Does everyone use that heavy a line? Etc? Just asking before I re rig one.
