I picked up a new Sierra 2500 4×4 diesel and wanted to see how much drop I should get for my hitch. I put a 4″ drop on last night and my hitch height is about 21″. Im pulling a 2011 PII on a dual axle trailer and it looks a little high. I was thinking of putting a 6″ on it but was wondering if this would be too low. Also, I noticed that the hooks on my safety chains are too small to connect to the holes on my bumper. Any suggestions?
I think the recommended height is 18-20″s to the top of the ball, so a 6″ drop should work. For the safety cables, you can put screw lock chain links on your hitch and attach you cables to those. (You mentioned bumper, but I assume you meant trailer hitch) Just ideas – I have an older 2500 chevy and have no problem w/ safety cables or 4″ drop hitch.
your trailer should be setting level to put the load on both sets of tires, if it is off low or high shifts most of your load to one axle where it will prematurely wear the tires out too low front tires too high back tires plus it will decrease angle of departure on back of trailer which comes into play going up or down sloped driveways and intersections
Not to highjack the post but what are you guys getting for gas miliage with the 2500 HD Diesel? I am looking at the 2500HD or the F-250. Love my Tundra but tired of 10.5 MPG pulling the Puma FTD.Anyone interested in buying a loaded Tundra Limited with camper shell???JameyLast edited by Caldwellj on March 20th, 2012, 6:44 pm, edited 1 time in total.
For me its too early to tell since I only got 600 miles on it. This weekend I did make a 300 mile roundtrip and got 20.3 mpg on the highway unloaded doing 70-75mph
WOW!!! Is that unloaded boat in tow or is that just driving with no boat?I had the same safety chain issue on my Tundra and got some locking snap links that are rated for 5,000 pounds. Works great and are very secure.Jamey
I had a 2008 Chevy 2500 and I used a 5″ drop to tow my Puma with no issues. Ride height was about 20″. I still have the drawbar to fit the 2 1/2″ receiver if you need. Id make you an excellent deal if you are interested. Lost my job, and it was either the truck or the cat that had to go. Boy I miss diesel power!
Because of suspension, wheels, tires and all combinations the height suggested for new rigs is now 20″, and 19″ works fine. Obviously 21″ to the top of the ball should be fine too. If your hitch itself is 21″, then your too high.
