Im hoping for some good advice on a small problem Im having. After slinging a blade off my 26 trophy prop Mercury replaced it under warranty but the new one didnt come with a blowout ring. Without the blowout ring my 2007 Puma powered by 225 Pro XS is blowing out on the hole shot. I seem to be getting better top end speed without the blow out ring but the blow out has to be fixed. Is it possible to fix this blowing out problem by changing to smaller vent plugs in the prop or do I need to just get another blow out ring? Right now I am running all large vent plugs. I know some of you guys have lots of experience with this set up and I look forward to hearing from you. Todd WittCorinth, MS
Todd, you will get some excellent advice on here from BCB ans well as several of the owners. My suggestion would be to switch to solid plugs or at least the smaller holes.None of these changes should affect top end but will drastically change take off, blow out, etc.
Basstar thanks for the advice. I know I can count on the other owners here for some great advice. I was thinking the smaller plugs were probably the way to go but it never hurts to get others advice on here.
Todd, I know you fish Gville and if it was me and knowing what looks to be grass heaven I would find another blowout ring and run it. You will get a bunch of grass behind the prop without running a blowout ring if you fish grass invested stuff. With that said, AJ is right…if you dont want to go back to a blowout ring then go to smaller holes. It really is trial and error, pull a plug and put a solid in and run it and see…if still not where you want it pull another plug and replace it with a solid one. There is no magic combination on the plugs as each rig/load is a little bit different.Take care bud and you will get her running good again it will just take a little trial and error.Judd Lasiter
Todd,Im running both a 27 and a 26 Trophy on my Puma/250 Pro XS, depending upon load and air temps, but I dont run a blowout ring on either one. With the 27, I have all four holes plugged with solid plugs, and on the 26, I have 3 solid and one small open plug. I have never been able to run the blowout ring and make it work right. If you need or want a ring, just let me know, I have several in my toolbox, and Ill just mail one to you, but I dont think you need it.And, with the grass levels we have on Pickwick, there has been no problem with grass behind any of my props.Mike Whitten
TW, The bow out (vent) ring has nothing to do with speed. It will only effect your hole shot. Add the ring on a 225, not on a 250 Pro XS. Ring, standard holes and play with those PVS plugs if you dont have the hole shot you want.Odds are the other blade was broken and flexing, or was not a good a polish and cup. That is where your speed comes from. You may also want to and improve by changing your height some. All props are not created equal.BCB
The only problem that Ive ever had with vegetation behind the prop was lily pad stems and not hydrilla or other type of grass. Play with engine height and plug sizes and you should be able to find a combination that will work without affect too much top end speed. As said above, the blow out ring and plugs do not affect top end speed. All props are not created equal as BCB put it……………AMEN to that!
I am running an 05 Puma with 225XS. I was also running the blow out ring and large open plugs. I switched to no blow out ring and pluged all the holes. Like everyone said every prop and set up are different but this works best for me.Jamey
Thanks to all of you for the great information. It appears I just need to do some experimentation to see what works best on my particular setup. I will give the plugs and a blow out ring a try and let you guys know how it goes.
Take your prop to a local prop shop! I have took brand new tempest and trophys out of the box and check pitch and rake and some would be off. Some trophys I have changed the pitch on only two blades this can help with whole shot some times. I have took new props out of the box also that wore no where close to be balanced. Some guys I have talked to say that they go in reverse for a while and some times it will undo some of the grass and debree to get throught the day.
