I have noticed at the front eye hook that the roller is chipping the gelco when i am loading the boat. Has anyone else had this problem? What options do i have on fixing this, or is it just me being inexperienced in loading. I load it just like my other fishing friends. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I see alot of people at ramps hit the bow stop rather hard. I would suggest trying to load the boat more slowly and gently to the bow stop. Also, take care not to put the bow between the grooves on the bow stop. Corky
Year model and roller style?
It is an 2007. I am not sure what roller style it is. It has a center roller, and two end caps. I am not hitting it hard. I pull up to the roller gently, and only a few times have loaded using the motor. Most of the time i hook the strap and load cinch it up that way.
The chipping was more consistent with the Vinyl Ester and the Stoltz rollers, which is why we asked the year model. You are probably seeing a little black under that chip and that is the VE Barrier coat. This would indicate that it did receive a substantial impact at least once, and the bow eye compresses against the side of the drilled gel coat and the shearing occurs on dissimilar materials. As the materials are of a different flexibility they can thus shear in that situation. If it is not behind the bow eye towards the rear, then you have something else. Plus check that roller assembly and the post on the FAQ section which refers to the notched rollers if your boat does not have them.
My 2007 has chipping in the bow roller area as well. Converting to the new style roller will not allow the boat to get in-between the roller end caps . The new roller doesnt help center the boat as you load. Ive been loading boats of all brands since 1973. Ive never had one as hard to center on the roller as a BassCat. Im not sure if its just a Sabre thing (I know a couple others with the same deal) or the way it is. Its not a huge deal for me, the small chips should not spread. The trailer is a HOSS compared to most others on the market. Ive noticed when loaded my boat sits way up on the bunks. Ill take a few bow roller chips (I know mine came when I had the old roller) over a hook in the hull from the boat not being properly supported.
The reason Pantera II, Pantera Classic and Sabre hulls are tougher to center is the offset bow and learning where the Vee is located.
Thanks for the information John. I will have to check on that new style roller. I wonder if i can get them off the BCB website?
Check out the “No Gap Roller Retro Kit” if your center roller is still OK. I just changed out the entire deal since my center roller had a split in it. http://www.basscatstore.com/rollers.aspx
I just recently went through this type deal. I had some minor chipping / scratch right in front of the eye about 4-5 inches in lenght. It occured when the bow caught in the gap in the roller, so it was rubbing against metal. It was not bad and could of probably been left alone, but I cant stand it being anything less than right. So I ordered the retro no gap kit and put that on. It is just the two end caps, so you will need to get the roller to if you want to replace it at the same time. Anyhow that solves a lot of the problem, plus the new bolt they send is shorter, so you dont have as long a bolt sticking out. To put my mind at ease I took a little quick fix marine tex to and filled in the chip/scratch so that it would look better and be taken care of for good. If I was doing it again, I would use the regular marine tex as the quick fix sets up faster than you can smooth it out. Also use a little tape, so you dont get it anywhere you dont want it. The biggest thing though is realizing the bow is slightly off center. You really have to keep that in mind, which is easier said than done.
