I have a 3 month-old Puma. A couple of trips ago, when I started up the engine, the trim indicator on the Smart Craft went haywire. The trim indicator would jump from 0.00 up to over 4 and back down, jumping around haphazardly at every setting in between, making it impossible to read the true setting. It kept doing it until I held down the + and – simultaneously for 10 seconds, resetting the Smart Craft. It seemed OK for the next trip, then started it again the last time out. Any suggestions?

It is the trim sender on the engine. You can easily replace it with a new part yourself, as there are only two screws and wires to the engine. Though if you are concerned it is a Mercury part and your dealer would be able to handle it for you. These are not commonly an issue on SC setups, and are VERY common on analog senders.

In the SmartCraft manual there is a setup you can do that will sometimes fix the reading being wrong. I am not sure if it will help if the reading is jumping all over the place. Jay

Do you happen to have an XS? My XS came with an analog sender from the factory and my SC 1000 guages needed a digital sender to work correctly. The analog sender may be simple to install but that darn digital sender was a bear. Actually the sender was easy enough but snaking the wires through all the little holes, UUUGHHHH!

We had a boat in yesterday with the same problem on his Smart Craft gauges. Bass Cat is correct. We replaced the bad sending unit for the trim and the problem was fixed. It is a Mercury part and should be covered under warranty. Let us know if we can help in any way. Thanks for everyones help. Ill call my dealer and tell him whats happening and see if hell replace the part.
