I just received my Balzout mount. It didnt include hardware. What do you guys recommend mounting It on the bow? Balzout gave me a list of hardware they recommended however I dont see how Someone can Access using washers and nuts.
My suggestion would be wellnuts. These are kind of like the things used to mount a trolling motor on the bow, just smaller. You drill a hole for each bolt, push the well nut in and now you have a threaded insert ready for a bolt without having to reach under to through-bolt. Other approach is to cut a hole under the TM foot control, so that you can reach under through that to do the through-bolts, then you put a cover over the hole you just cut and you are set. BCB does this at the factory if they need access.I have also had success repairing stripped out holes by going to home depot and buying some of those plastic inserts you use to mount things on a drywall. Push em into the holes you drill, then a proper-sized sheet metal screw will thread in, expand the plug, and lock everything in place.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Please keep us updated on this. I just ordered my balzout mount yesterday, and I will be attempting the same thing next week. I will tell you that it was suggested to me to screw it down and use the urethane that bcb uses on their fenders and consoles when they mount them. Looking forward to see how you tackle the problem.johnLast edited by jgorka on March 1st, 2017, 2:20 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I have used the plastic drywall anchors in the past when my windshield mounting holes stripped out. They work great for a couple of months, but eventually wear our. The plastic just isnt robust enough for the long term IMO. For a windshield that needs regular tightening anyway, it was acceptable.
Just curious because I will be doing the same soon, rather not drill and access hole. Does Basscat have an opinion on well nuts? Seems like an awful lot of stress on fiberglass with the unit mounted 6-8 high and rough water running.
I just installed one on the bow in place of my ram mount. I just pre drilled the holes and screwed into the fiberglass. Before I put the screws in I put silicone on the threads and a good bit under the base of the mount itself. It is solid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
On my big ram mount I used big screws and black silicone adhevisive. I also pre-drilled and used a counterbore bit to champher the holes to prevent cracking. Been there 2 yrs without a hitch. I just didnt want to cut a access hole under the trolling moter foot control. Something to think about the ram has a little give with shock load. Im pretty for certian that Balzout is more rigid so the shock load will increase. I wouldnt be afraid to use the big screws. If they try to pull out you can always then use the machine screws and nuts with a plate or stainless fender washer. I will add the urethane is very good and will be better than silicone2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
I believe BCB cuts an access under the trolling motor pedal and uses a cover like the one they used when installing a passenger console. That would allow you to use nylock nuts and fender washers or a backing plate. As little “give” as that mount has – the leverage and shock loads from a large unit are bound to stress the fiberglass. JMHO. As much as I hate the idea of laying down a unit on the deck before runs with a RAM – at least you arent stressing the fiberglass. A Ballzout is designed to not give and the stresses have to go somewhere…….
Not sure about the Balzout. But ram make a mounting plate that is square and larger than the round plate. More surface area spreads the load. But I always lay my unit anytime I move. I dont tighten it tight. And just pull it up. Not sure how the Balzout works though2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Always Always Always use bolts with fender washers and locking nuts. The Ballzout is a rigid style mounts which puts a lot of stress on the fiberglass. The access hole is supper easy to install. If you can predrill a screw hole, you can use a hole saw. p.s. Put a dab of silicone on the fender washers. This way you can stick them, then put the lock nut on.
