Kicking some tires for SUV/Truck with towing weight package rated for 5,000lbs. Is that enough for the SabreFTD/Single Axle?
Swatter, Towed my C ougar for 3 years with a v-6 ford explorer just had to take it easy on the hard corners as the wheel base was shorter than a truck or van. Had I installed a better sway bar or stiffer shocks I would have been fine. I cant see that you would have any problems with a Sabre it is probably 5-800 lbs lighter tow weight. Just make sure the Sabre has trailer brakes.Irv
isch, 95% of my towing will be no more then 30 miles one way. At most 90 miles oneway the other 5% of the time. My SabreFTD trailer will have brakes to assist too. Whatever I eventually get it will have the towing package. Actually, I am considering Fords new Explorer. Wont rule out another F150 too. Thanks for the follow up.
Just a word of caution, the earlier explorers like mine were full body on frame chassis whereas the new ones are unibody, I hear (you may want to confirm this as my info may be wrong) based on the taurus platform. I would think that a full frame would be better suited for towing applications. However the new ones are wider and more stable than earlier versions. I would opt for the towing package obviously and any upgrade to rear suspension stabilty that you can get. I would also add an after market trans cooler. The 4 liter v-6 is near indestructible if still available.irv
Irv,Thanks for your insights. Yep, Any vehicle I get will have a towing package. When I first start to consider new vehicles I always start with a SUV but seem to end up with a truck.
Nissan Frontier will do just fine. If you want ultimate buy the F150 with Ecoboost. Had a Frontier before I got the Ecoboost. Ecoboost is not the best name but it is twin turbo V6. True 22 mpg hwy tows like a diesel.
Fly my next door neighbor pulls a 186 champion around every where with a ford escape with a v-6 does fine. I pull my P2 with my wifes Murano now and again if we all going somewhere
You would probably be fine with any vehicle at 5000 lbs and that rig. I have pulled comparable weighted rigs with a Blazer and Explorer with no problems. I have pulled a Ranger Z-19, 225, dual axle with a 2005 Toyota 4- runner. Before I purchased my Cougar I test towed vehicles with the Ranger. The new 4-runner has an even larger wheel based and towed very well while getting good gas mileage. Some of the other models including the 05 4-runner got squirrely on the interstate over 70 mph with a bigger rig, however the new one did not have that problem at all. I dont think issues will occur on short lower speed runs, especially with the Sabre.
I yanked every sized bass boat made including all several 20s all over the south with our old 2003 V-8 Runner. Wish they still put the V-8 in the Runner. The punched out V-6 does well but it also still gets 12 MPG towing 70-75 MPH. If you keep a SUV a while one you may consider would be the 2012 ML350 BlueTec. It is about the same size as the runner with a 7800 pound tow rating , 400 ft lbs of torque and getting 28 MPG on the road not towing. Swat – I tow my Sabre around all over creation with my F-150. It has the small 4.6 V8, which is only slightly stronger than the V6. Ive towed thru the Ozarks (a bit of a struggle) and last weekend went from Little Rock to Lake Fork in Texas. An SUV thats geared right with a “big” V6 wouldnt scare me at all with a Sabre. As others have posted – it needs to have enough wheelbase for safety purposes. As for trailer brakes – dont all BCB trailers have them?
