Ok guys I am about to buy my first boat and I think its going to be a Bass Cat. I found a Pantera II. Its a 1997 SC with 400 hours and has an Opti 200 with 82 hours. Asking price is under 10k. Want to know what you guys think about the older cats. Any thing to look out for with these boats? I have told my wife that it would be able to pull a tube from time to time. I hope Im not lying . Any info you guys have for me would be great. Thanks
i have a 1996 and love it just bought it in march couldnt ask for a better boat and Yes it will pull a tube . the one thing i looked out for was the floor walk around in it and make sure their isnt any soft spots . then check the pumps and all the rest of the electronics . The motor should have a compression test done on it and looked over by a OMC mechanic . Will the seller let you take it out on the lake ??? if he will take for a spin i love my P2 and the only thing Im doing to it is changing the dash and putting hydraulic steering on it . Enjoy it !!!
The 97 models were very good rigs and you should be fine pulling a tube or a skier. If you need more umph, go to a five blade propeller and your set. BCB
94 p2 with a 94 200 mariner efi. love it, could not sk for a better boat. bought it last year and would love a new one but there is too much uncertainty in my industry right now. i agree with mcvoan that the motor needs compression test and a test drive would be great also. i would get on the ground and take a look at the bottom of the hull and look for any gouges or cracks but these boats can take a beating pretty well. the price seems fair if everything checks out. the blue book might be a little less than the sellers price but if that boat and motor check out it will be the best 10k you ever spend and you can enjoy that boat for many years to come. as far as the wife and a tube, heck tow 3 or 4 of them. we ski behind the jet skis but mine has plenty of power to pull a tube/kneeboard/wakeboard/skis. good luck and i know you will enjoy it. ps, this board is an excellent resource for the 5000 questions you will have about the boat should you decide to purchase. the members are quick to help with their personal exprience with any issue you might encounter. you will even see the owners of the company on here chiming in on some issues. that alone adds significant value to your boat of any age imho.brad
Well I wasent sure about buying a Bass Cat I dont see many of them around. But the more research I do to more I think its one of the best boats on the water.
I owned a 97 PII dual console that we bought new. It was a very solid boat and ran very well, although I had a 200 EFI. The boat is very well constructed, just follow the above suggestions, get the engine checked, and a good prop, youre set.I pulled tubes around with mine, used the cable/float that you hook onto the transom tie down eyes, then add the rope. Worked good. My 97 PII seemed to like a 4 blade Trophy prop, and the 5 blade would be perfect if you do a lot of pulling.I sold mine in 2006 for $12K…that included a spare trolling motor, 3 stainless steel props and other goodies. That is a “ball park” figure, not sure where you are located (not in profile), so your region may not be aware of the BassCat “family” way of taking care of each other.Hope this helps.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I live and fish in central Indiana with a trip up around the Hayward/Cable WI are every year for a couple weeks. I wont be doing much tubing just slower speeds once in a while. The outboard is an Optimax 200 EFI but I am not sure of the year. They said the compression was within specs. It better be with 82 hours on it.
Central Indiana is good. There are not too many Cats up there, but the top dealer in that area posts on here regularly…http://www.shermsmarine.com/. Not sure how far away you are, but Sherm is very knowledgable and can help you out “locally”….96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Drive it. Buy it. Use it. Love it. Great boat and when you have questions, hop on this forum and get all the help you need. Hope you join the BCB family. Good luck.
D,everyone that made a response before me……they are some of the smartest people in the world simply because they all own Bass Cats. I have 2 currently a 96 PII and a new 2010 Puma. You will not be unhappy with the rig or the customer service. JD Power and Associates thought so much about Rick & Crew that they were awarded the JD Power award for the last 5 years. Good Luck and when you do buy a cat let us see it. Godspeed!Brian
