Topic: Cougar Trailer Brakes Locking Up

I just picked up a brand new Cougar A/E yesterday. Drove it home 5 hours, backed it into my garage, no problems. Today I pulled her out and washed her. When I tried to back it in, brakes locked. So I pulled forward, no proble. Put it in reverse, brakes lock. So I decided to pull the boat all the way out to the street, unhooked and rebooked everything. Pulls forward fine, and backs up fine until I come to a grade then the brakes lock up. Now I have no way of getting my boat back into the garage because I have to back up a small hill and the brakes lock up every time.first of all, is there any way to disable the brakes?Secondly, what could be the problem? I never hit anything, ran over anything, nothing. Just pulled it out this morning and now the brakes lock up.Frustrated!!!!!

I am not sure how the new brakes work. Old style couplers had a manual, reverse lock-out for backing up. My guess is that there is a wire not connected for the backing lock-out to work.I am sure that someone will weigh in soon with the complete and accurate response.

Is your vehicle wired for the 5 pin harness? That 5th pin is tied to the vehicles back up lights and supplies power to the brake solenoid that opens it up.This sounds like your problem.

If not there is a special key that was supplied with your trailer that you put into the coupler to prevent it going back while backing up. I just ran down and took this pic for you!

Thanks, that worked, but key wont stay in place. Just taped it there. Closest dealer is 40 miles away. Hope it holds!Thank you very much for the help, huge relief to have boat inside.Boat is a 2015 with 6 pin round connector, no adaptor.

Dont leave that key in there while driving. Its only to be used while backing up. It does fit very loosely.
