Problem just started this past weekend. Motor only has 15hrs on it. I first noticed that it was harder to start. When started idled very low and rough. It would stay running most of the time but sometime it would die. Once on plane it would accelerate ok. Once it reached 5700RPMS plus it would start to surge. Not bad but enough for my passenger to notice. It never would reach top speed. We did smell gas several time as well. Any ideas? Thanks

Unburned fuel is what Ward is suggesting. Though we think this is a newer engine and that is unusual if it is. The coils seemed to be fixed recently. No doubt a trip to a service center is in order as this is beyond most to repair and Wards laptop assessment could be spot on? Though in any case its got to be checked out.
Sounds more like fouled plug/plugs to me. I dont think youd see 5700 with coil out, but depends on position of coil circuit,etc,,,,,Dealer will find in a minute though, so a trip is in order. Sorry for youre issue, but i do consider it rare for your hours.
Post this on bassboat central on the merc page and Don will let you know what to check. I know my 08 250 pro xs can be hard to start but once running it is fine. Don suggested the heat is causing it and it was around 100 degrees when this happened. He said you must pump the bulb everytime when it is this hot. Damn merc can be cold blooded and now does not like the heat plus I had the coil issues as well. Sure miss my yammie and cant wait to go back. only thing I do not like about my cat is that damn merc!
Never heard such a thing as heat causing one to need to prime the fuel bulb. Ive been running Optimax engines in the Texas heat for 7 years and Ive never had to use the primer bulb one time! Jeff, theres no way youre going to find the problem. My guess is you might have a bad plug, a bad injector, or even a bad fuel pump. Though, why guess when the wrench should be able to figure it out in a few minutes.

Let them figure it out. I wont be surprised how simple the fix will be. If not your covered by warranty at worst. There are thousands of these motors being built by humans (Pick your color) and overall excel on reliability and performance. No brand has any room to cast stones when isolated cases occur. Just be glad you have it on a BassCat. Youll be back on the water sooner then you think enjoying that nice rig. I know its frustrating but be secure and have faith that you have a great boat and motor. Good luck and good speed.
never hear of it either Phil until now. I had my merc in the shop last week and on the computer. Nothing was found although it cost $110 to find that out. In the afternoons when it is really hot an humid it is rough starting and did it again Sat. pumped the bulb and no problems. Don the merc mechanic said it is impartative to do that every time but even more so in this heat and humidity. I never did it on any other motors so I give up.
Not to dispute PA, but a good rule of thumb is at very minimum use the fuel primer ball prior to the first start of the day. The engines fuel pump is designed to keep the system primed when the motor is running. It is not designed to prime the entire length of the fuel hose by simply starting the engine. Prime the ball make sure it stays firm and start the engine, the ball should remain firm throughout the rest of the day. Most folks do not use their rigs everyday and the hose will loose its prime over the course of a few days (which most of us are only weekend anglers) so prime the system every time you unhook the charger on your way out the door. Might help save a fuel pump down the road.
Thanks for all the advice and help. Its scheduled to go in on Friday afternoon. The guys at Dupo Marine are going to work on Friday evening. Now thats service.
