Help hydralic steering

I lowered my motor down all the way while the boat was on the trailor, with one hand on the back of the motor I could move the motor side to side a three maybe four inches or so, I looked and saw that the hydralic cylinder was sliding back and fourth, should this do that or should the motor not move like that.

Shouldnt move much without the steering wheel moving ! Get your steering serviced NOW ! Do not mess around with this, could be something very minor which could cause failure if not attended to. Good luck, D.

yeah, I can do the work just not sure what is wrong or were to start

I can do the work too, but dont, because there are technicians who do this every day, and know what to look for and how to repair. Dont fool around with this, any leak, or undetected problem could cause total steering failure, and at wot, that aint a good thing ! Take the boat to your dealer,,,,,now ! IMHO, D.

Sorry rjl…I agree with D, if it is steering related it isnt worth your health to try and do it yourself. Take it in and get someone who knows where to start and what to look at so they can make sure you are safe. Steering stuff is not something to backyard mechanic on in my opinion. You probably are capable but it isnt worth the risk. Good luck and sorry you are having issues. Judd Lasiter

Check out the steering nut that is on the right side of the Hydraulic cylinder as you are standing at the back of the boat. The nut is held in place by a little allen screw and can back off if not checked regularly. With this nut loose your steering will still work but will have a lot of slack in it. You will find that the ability to control your boat at high speeds is almost totally lost. It may be something much more than this but this is something simple to check that may take care of it. The hydraulic cylinder should not move at all unless you are turning the steering wheel. You motor might have a little play in it but you are talking about no more than a 1/4 of an inch at most. Sound like you have a leak in your system or a bunch of air. Either way get it check out now!!!!Last edited by TexCaboCat on December 21st, 2007, 1:12 am, edited 1 time in total.God Bless, Stephen

We prefer to simply refer you to a dealer for more information. There was an owner manual for the Steering in the original packet, though you dont mention the year model of the rig and there are different applications. BCB

the year is a 98 pantera 3 I added fluid and it is better, but you can still move the motor by hand, and when your running if you look back at the cylinder you can see it moving side to side some while you are running you cant feel it in the steering but you can visualy see it.

We again say that if you have not bled the system yourself, then it needs service, and those fittings need to be checked on the mechanical portion. BCB
