Anybody got any ideas why the belt would snap on my motor. (225 Pro XS) Went to the lake this morning. Started and appeared to run fine. The first time I came off pad I heard a whining and squeaking noise. Lifted the cowl, started the motor and the whining was coming from one of the pulleys. Anyway, I fished for a while and decided to head back and put boat back on trailer. About a half mile from boat ramp I lost some power and brought her off pad. When I did the motor just quit. Will crank but runs like _____ !!!!!! When I got home and took cowl off again there was black stuff from the belt every where. Took the black plastic peice off top of motor and found the belt was broken and that was what all the black stuff was. Took a blower abd blew most of it out. Was wondering if anybody else has had this problem or if anybody has got any ideas what caused this. Guess I will get it in the shop next week. Hopefully it is something that is covered under warrenty !!! Thanks
Maybe a bearing going out on the alternator. Belt might have gotten loose some how and started slipping. Theres a number of reasons why it could have broken. More than likely will be covered by warranty.
Tension spring broke? Then friction from slipping belt caused it to burn through? I had a tension spring break on my 225 a couple weeks after I took delivery. –Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
One thing is for sure, spin every pulley you can reach except for the crankshaft/flywheel. Ive seen one air pump that had internal problems and locked up. The alternator and/or any idlers/tensioners could also be a problem. Most of these I have seen were not just a simple belt failure, there was something binding that caused the belt to break/burn and come apart.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Your neighborhood wrench will tend to this and find what caused the belt to frazzle. BCB
Think one of the pulleys locked up on me. Got to playing with it last night and one of them will not spin. Will get it in the shop tomorrow or the next and see what they say !!!Thanks
Compressor is what locked up on the top of my motor. Will ask the mechanic when I pick the boat up, but can somebody school me a little on what a compressor does on one of these motors. To be perfectly honest I did not realize this thing even had a belt until I busted one !!!! Thanks Joey PS: Is a warranty thing and Mercury is going to pay for it. Gonna go ahead and put a new seal in my trim also that I asked about a couple weeks ago.
This is a direct injection engine and works on fuel and air which are both compressed by that air compressor. There is appx. 100 pounds of pressure on the fuel rail, and 90 pounds of air pressure on the system from that air compressor. BCB
this compressor is Mercs way to atomize the fuel. The yammers use 2000 psi and a clever nozzle design to atomize and disperse the fuel in the combustion chamber. Merc uses a blast of air to break up the fuel as it is injected. Difficult to compare the two. 2000 PSI is a bear to prevent leaks, and leaks leak a bunch. The air compressor is another mechanical device in addition to fuel pumps. It can go bad as well. Yours isnt the first one I have seen locked up, although they are nowhere near a common occurrence. Ive seen air compressors on autos that use the old air-injection method to reduce pollution fail in the same way. An perfect mechanical device just doesnt seem possible. Even the Apollo moon missions had their share of problems…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
