I try and try to get use to standing on nose of my boat with gobs of deck behind me, and pro pole pushing me out of boat at all times. I wish BC had two pin positions at least. I have tried wiith out pole, and still, balancing on the nose of the boat with deck space behind me just does not make sense. I am standing on the narrowest part of the entire boat trying to fish. I do not feel safe. golfen
I hear ya. But, if you look at how a BassCat is built the front of the hull goes down faster than most boats so the hull is in the water under you instead of behind you. The best way i can explain is pretend you are in a boat that is a foot longer in front of you but the front foot of the boat is chopped off. Then all that wasted nose space is gone and out of your way for casting. In other words, my puma is 20-4″ long. Its like being in a 21-4″ boat with the front foot gone.I never use the seat as it is too far up. – sort of like walking on water. I have had my Couger since Sept. 2011(my first Bass Cat). I dont even notice it anymore. I feel it is an advantage now, it gets the nose and trolling motor out of the way when pitching and casting. I may stand different than some, I turn the butt seat around and lean against the flat part of the back of the seat. I cannot go without the seat, I just feel more unbalanced without it, guess I am getting old?!?!?It may just take some extra time to adjust. Best of luck, Bill
I currently fish out of my second CougarFTD. It took me a while to get used to the far forward location of the butt seat. But now, it feels comfortable. I wish I had the balancing skills to fish without the seat, but it just isnt there. Im an old dude, but I have never had good balance without a butt seat to lean on from time to time, even 20 years ago.
I fish alot of Rough water…..Lake St Clair and Lake Erie…..Sometimes I look like a Bull rider when I am trying to stay on the front of the boat in big waves or boat wakes… I am very comfortable while on the trolling motor…I do lean back hard into the but seat to maintain my balance when it gets rough…I really like the forward position for Drop shotting….It is way easier to get a vertical presentation with the DS if you dont have to stretch out over the bow as much…I just turn at a 45 degree angle and drop my line straight down beneath the boat..
The largest concern for most is moving from fishing position to the floor. Heres a tip: to do this use the seat as a pivot and do a slight spin on the butt seat. Keep your position on the seat and carry your legs in a semi circle as you spin. This prevents trying to walk around the butt seat and fishing rods. Not to be rather personal, though those carrying some extra weight seem to have the largest challenges with the bow forward design.Fish Doc, that concave back on the seat is designed for leaning against and is another of the little details that has been copied, being used by other companies.Last edited by Bass Cat Boats on June 3rd, 2012, 1:37 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I had been boatless for a few years when I decided to back into bass fishing, the trolling motor position doesnt bother me at all. I have used the front post twice as I fish with no seats on the boat. though I have the leaning post in the locker for those windy afternoons when they come threw the canyons at 40mph. I personally think had I been in my old boat this year I would have lost a couple quality fish trying to lean over the trolling motor. Now if I could just get the center divider out of the livewell..Steve “Gunz” Molina
SteveM, cut the divider with a small saw into upper and lower halves. Get an H shaped plastic to clean the joint up when you decide to reinstall it and drill a couple new holes for added screws. Use a hand driver and no power on the screws.
Hey Thanks….. I sorta considered that but then I thought “what if I want to put it back……way cool!ThanksSteve “Gunz” Molina
I,m 6 foot 190 and still athletic at age 52. Tried w/o poles and still struggle. Bought a offset pole for seat and use that some if I am cranking a lot. I will try to shorten pro pole to hit below butt to see if I can balance better. Bout fell in twice at Lake Hartwell yesterday. Still two positions would be nice.
