Steering Cables vs Hydralic conversion??

Ok Guys, I feel like its time for new steering cables. Matter of fact, they have never been changed on my 93 P2, and I was wondering what yalls thoughts were on converting to Hydraulic Steering. Is this a possibility in my boat or is the cables more practical, and has anybody changed these and/or how big a task is this to do? Your comments and experiences appreciated…..

i changed dual cables on my 95 p2 the hardest part was getting the cables routed thru gunnel. i tied rope on old cable when i pulled them out and tied to new cables and pulled thru. you will have to pull motor off jackplate and twist to line up cables with motor. I ordered cables thru local boat shop for around 350. probaly half day project. i have had boats with hydraulic and cable for the money diff. i would stay with cable.

On this age of boat we would stay cable steering.

Stay with cables. Consider yourself very lucky. Cables usually last about 10 years. I had the cables changed on my 96 boatin 2011, and then when the motor toasted in 2012, I was able to upgrade to hydraulic steering with the new motor at the same time as the Mercury dealer I got my engine from took my 175 EFI as a trade.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner

BCB, do yall keep these cables in stock?Jignpig, this boat sit in a storage facility for 15+ years and thats probably why theyve made it this long.

May 88 model had Morse cables .I bought in 89 sold it in2014. I never changed them. Alot of times the barrel on the motor gets gunk in it.i slid it out a couple times and use a gun barrel cleaning brush and mineral spirits in a drill to clean the inside of the barrel. Ive never had cables break, but I have had the rack on the helm end of the cable wear out badly enough that in some positions the steering would skip a couple of teeth. Unfortunately, you get to replace the whole shebang when that happens, cable and the rack on the end.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
