Steering wheel install question

Ordered a new steering wheel for my 1995 P2 but the old steering wheel will not come off, replaced a wheel on a 2000 cougar once and it was simple. I removed the nut but its not budging. Thoughts?

Remove the nut then try some PB Blaster and let it sit for a while. Then a steering wheel puller, although it will almost certainly damage the steering wheel itself. Some wheels have threaded holes you can use to hook the puller up. My old Astro did not, leaving me with the only option of using a 3-jawed puller which hooks behind the wheel and then presses on the steering shaft. Get it tight, with the nut still on but loose, and lightly tap the nut which can help break it free. If you screw the puller too tight, the jaws will bend the points where they are gripping the wheel.Your problem is “1995”. 22 years of getting wet, drying out, oxidizing, possibly some rust, etc.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

I lubed it up pretty good and pried on it pretty good but wouldnt budge it almost looked like it was threaded on.no rust boat has real low hrs and always garaged. I will see if I can get a puller just didnt want to damage the helm.Thanks for the responses.

Loosen the nut and leave it on the end of the stud a few threads. Turn around backwards to the console and wedge your knees/thighs between wheel and dash. Apply pressure with your legs and strike the nut with a mallet. You may want to use a block of wood against the nut. The wheel will pop off rather easily.

I couldnt get my big a$$ in there and was afraid of breaking the blinker trim levers. I ended up having to use a steering wheel puller. It is also probably age-dependent. The longer they are on, the harder they are to get off. Mine (Astro) was REALLY stuck. I ended up drilling holes through the steering wheel spokes and running bolts from the puller through those holes. And bent the crap out of them before it finally cried “uncle” and let go. Thought I was going to be driving around with a warped wheel for a while.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
