Looking at 05 Puma with 250 Optimax and 04 Cougar FTD with 225 Optimax. I have been in a Puma but not an 04 Cougar FTD. What can I expect from the Cougar in the rough water at LOZ? Price difference is pretty great between the boats. Would the Puma be the better option? Thanks, LOZman
LOZ, Ride between the two hulls, will be a little different, with the edge toward the Puma. What would put me in the PUMA is the 250, and a newer model year. Those two things alone, plus I really like the PUMA net storage, would make the call for me. Then again, I”m spending YOUR money!!!! Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN
Mal, having owned the Puma and now using a Cougar for the last couple months. I would also give the edge to the Puma. I am with Mike and like the storage it has to offer and the ride is just a little better. Not that the cougar is rough in any way cause that is not the case. Rides like a dream and will out run the Puma just a little and is one fine rig. But knowing you like I do and some of the back problems you have. The Puma would be my choice !! Good Luck
Come take a ride in my Cougar FTD/250 Pro XS, and you can judge for yourself how it rides on LOZ. Having run both Courgar FTDs and Pumas, I personally prefer the layout and performance of the FTD. There is fuel tank differences that affect this as well as a very heavy front net storage receptacle that takes up a lot of front storage room. The FTD boxes are large and the under-seat storage is something that I personally like, including the cooler between the seats… p.s. You may decide that you like MINE so much youll buy it…Last edited by Gary Hollander on August 4th, 2009, 11:54 pm, edited 1 time in total.
It is a matter of your preferences. It really is that simple, just what do you prefer to fish from. Do you want the net scabbard, or do you want a massive storage area in those center compartments?
I have had an 03 FTD, 05 Puma, and now an 09 Puma. I like the Pumas ride better. My 05 Puma was a soft ride and was great in rough water. I know the 09 is not what your looking at, its even better! Awesome! I guess it would really depend on the price and the warranty….
Talked to both owners last night. Called both owners this morning. Puma was taken off the market and Cougar owner decided he had priced the boat too low. I will keep the comments from this post in mind as I continue my search. Gary H., I would like a ride in your Cougar FTD. Im at the Lodge and if memory serves me, you are around Linn Creek. Ive got your email address and will contact you on my next trip down. Probably after the impending heat wave. Thank you for the offer. LOZman
Nice of Gary to offer his boat for your process of figuring out your preference. Jump in at the ramp and take it for a spin and see how it handles with you at the wheel. Riding is fine, though figuring out what you want takes a drive.
It really is a matter of personal preference. Theres not enough performance difference between the ride or the top end speed to make a decision based on that. It will come down to whether you like a place to store your net, rear storage, raised deck (Puma) vs. more storage on the front deck, under seat storage, lower deck (Cougar FTD). Look at those things in person and youll be able to make your decision. Good luck shopping!
LOZMan, give me a shout next time you are at LOZ and we will hook up. Im in Linn Creek Cove, 31MM…
