I hit a tree in Bennetts Bayou today. It felt like I hit the boat but cant find any damage on bottom of boat. But did take a blade off of my 6 month old blade power tech. I have Insurance I am going to contact on Monday, Do you think I should have the boat looked at also. I dont have any leaks in the lower unit. And the shaft seems to turn true. It still runs over 60 with three blades it didnt seem to have much vibration, except at lower speeds. It is a 96 Pantera II with a 200 efi Mariner. It also did not take on any water. The scag was not damaged either.
I was going at about 50 when it happened
There are two trees that are bouyant in Bennetts Bayou, both are past 6B on the left branch. Stay in the middle to avoid them. Any others would be floaters.
I would think you need to have your lower unit checked. If it was a powerful enough impact to knock a blade off, it seems like it had a good chance to jolt other components out of wack. Take care of all of it now.
I would have a dealer check things before you contact the insurance company. What they dont know cant hurt you…even if nothing is damaged they will note it as an accident. At least that is how homeowners and auto works. Good luck…if it was just the prop I would just buy one before I would file a claim on only that one item too. After a deductible it wouldnt be worth the ding on your record. Just my 2 cents. Glad you were ok and it doesnt sound to bad. Judd Lasiter
The propeller shaft and gear lube should be checked out. The crank could get damaged, though doubtful. The loss of a blade could also bend the shaft if you ran it hard. Otherwise we would not worry much about other damages. Check under the splashwell and the rear of the boat, though if there is no significant visible damage they wont do much oninsursnce usually on this year model. It would probably have to show damages. There are not hard obstacles in Bennetts that would do gge damage that those stump filled reservoirs would have.
Judd, these insurance companies have us all running scared — and dont think they dont know what theyre doing. Youre right about a possible premium increase, but if thats whats going to drive us, the consumer, we should have an option to buy a policy for claims over a gazilion dollars or something. Lord knows weve all spent a small fortune paying insurance companies, when its time for them to fess-up, we need to push it.
The only reason I ran it hard back was because I didnt know if I was taking water on or not. I was more worried about a hole in the boat than I was the motor. I didnt even think I hit the prop.
Been there dont that!! I would have Gray @ Basscat just look at it. He is the best Fiberglass man around (my opinion). I know they are busy with the O.I. but if you got a few min to run it by he will shot straight with you. He is just like the rest of them out there you get true coustmer service not just talk.
