Hello, I am trying to understand what electronics to consider purchasing. I currently have an Eagle Fish Elite 480 (has gps) at the console and a Humminbird 200 DX at the bow of my Pantera classic. I know the HB 200 DX is not a very good fish finder. So, I am definitely looking at upgrading that. However, I feel overwhelmed when looking at all the different electronics. I confess that I dont really know how to maximize the use of electronics, but I am interested in trying to use them more often to help locate fish. Does anyone have any recommended suggestions on which electronics to consider? I dont have lots of money to spend, but I first want to hear what everyones suggestions are. And then see if I can afford or save up for that. Also, can anyone explain in short summary how to use electronics and to get the settings optimized? What advantages does color have over the black screens? Thanks!
It is counfrstaratonausing (confusing) to all and there are too many variations and options lately. Though we would book the size screen we want first, then find the units with the features you want in that screen size. So work around what you think you need, and move from there. If you start without a basis, you will never figure it out and wind up with a big screen $1550 – $2550 unit. Put the screen you want in the budget you have planned. BCB
My two cents. Get a gps/finder console at the bow as well. If you like the one you have at the console then just get the same for the bow and link the two (if you can).
OK, I understand that… how bout I say focus on something similar to my Eagle Fish Elite 480 because I do like it. What I dont know is if there is something better as a fish finder for that size of screen and features. Can you link an Eagle Fish Elite 480?
Me personally, I would choose a unit that is within my budget. All the 5″ units are nice. Even the one you have now is okay, just wish it were colored. Your Eagle is a mire Lowrance copy. Accessories are the same. As for linking, I havent a clue. My two Lowrance colored units are not linked of my choice. If they were linked and the one module failed, then I might as well go home. Since theyre not linked , if one of the two modules failed, I still have the one unit to fish with. I just like the idea of having the two separate. Less trouble possibilities. Its very simple to exchange information from one unit to the other. Good luck! Glynn
This is like asking what kind of truck to buy I have been pleased with my Lowrance color units. I have a 522 in th dash and a 510 on the bow. I may be biased since Ive used Lowrance products going all the way back after Bird dropped the Super 30s and 60s (Im getting old) I had problems with the 522 keypad, within three days a new one was sitting on my doorstep with a free return label for the old one. Service after the sale is something to consider when spending 500.00 plus. IMHO the color finders/gps units make a difference, especially running a new lake or at night. With the Hotspots chips I can easily tell where the channels are since they are marked in dark blue. Fish are marked better as well. All brands offer good color, especialy in the expensive HD units! Ive seen the 520s and 522s on sale for 499.00 and less right now since they are getting replaced with the HD series. You could replace both your units for less than a grand. For day to day fishing and weekend tournaments these units work fine. If you go “big screen” get ready to drop some coins!
P.S. I have my new Hotspots chip in for the OI. If anyone wants to share waypoints with someone who has never seen that lake Im all ears LOL.
