http://www.fueltestkit.com/ I think I may have to give this a whirl.. What say you John Peiserich?C.O.D. Jr. III
Save your money. Buy a graduate 100 ml cylinder instead. You can then determine exactly how much EtOH is in the gas. I will post the method if anyone is interested. It isnt just an indicator method. Takes a few minutes – you do it first while you fill up the truck. John
Im a Fuel Inspector for the State of Oklahoma and we use a high dollar Zeltex Machine to test Ethanol %, for backup we use a simple glass tube made by Briggs & Stration P/N 100023 and can be bought at your local Lawn Mower Repair Shop for $8.00 or order online for $6.50. These are very reliable. What I can tell you in the State of Oklahoma the % of Ethanol they are putting in the gasoline is currently 7% to 9%. I test Stations on a daily basis. Oklahoma is one State that is not for Ethanol. I work in and around Oklahoma City. The only Stations that are putting in Ethanol are: 7-Elevens, Loves, OnCues, Flying Js, and Circle Ks. The Sams and Murphys are NOT. Hope this helps. Marion Bass
Peiserich and Bass are right. Pretty simple if you do it. Good Information on the ethanol from a source who knows. BCB
I just want to know if its in there. Found a station in Maumelle that advertises no ethanol.C.O.D. Jr. III
Ward Put 90 ml gas in graduated cylinder add 10 ml of h2o and shake. Let it settle and then look for meniscus (the line) if the line is below the 90 then there was alcohol in the gas. The alcohol is an aziotrophe as I recall and will not separate out of the h2o unlike gasoline. You can even calculate the %. John
I dont know how often Arkansas stations are inspected, but there should be a phone number on the sticker that was last checked. You can try calling that number and they will know the last time. If you purchase the Briggs test kit the tube has all the breakdowns on it. It has a mark to fill with water and a mark to fill the fuel then shake it and as stated by John just shake it and it shows the % of Ethanol. In Oklahoma we have 26 inspectors that check every station a mimium of every 6 months, right now they are being checked every 3-4 months. I would think that if they have no Ethanol signs posted , that they dont have. So for I havent found any yet, they know if they are caught they are locked down on the spot and face stiff fines for not posting the right signs. Thought you might like to know this information also on the Octane with Ethanol in it, 87 Octane with 7.5% Ethanol in it boosts the Octane to over 91 Octane and the 91 Octane with 7.5% Ethanol in it boosts to over 92. If your traveling in Oklahoma and have any questions on stations look for the white Oklahoma Corporation Inspection sticker and you can call the number on it which is 405-521-2487 and they can help you with any information on Ethanol at stations or any compliants you have. Though it does harm your fuel mileage.
For all you Diesel Engine owners, checked a Loves today and Diesel now has 5% Bio-Diesel. Talked to some truckers and mileage has dropped and it doesnt burn as hot. My thoughts are to stick with the regular gasoline and diesel and forget all the additives that they come up with. The Feds want to get better MPG on Vehicles, and with Ethanol and Bio-Diesel, there is no way. Marion
Mebasscat, can you offer any information on the Nitrogen enriched gas that (I think) Shell is advertising right now? Maybe Im getting too parinoid but it seems like a scam to charge more for the gas but actually give less for the $$ paid /spent per gallon
