Gentlemen,I have an 05 dual axle Puma trailer which has had a bearing failure. The axle is the front, non brake one. this trailer has leaf springs with square axle. The spindle has experienced significant galling and gouging to both outboard and inboard bearing seats. The opinion of my mechanic is both hub and spindle needs to be replaced.My questions are;Is it concidered good practice to measure the length cut the spindle away and weld on a new on obviously with the right dimensions or do I have to puchase a whole axle assembly.If I can weld on the spindle, are these available from BCB or do I need to go through UFP ?Thanks as alwaysBobSorry for the double post…the first one didnt show up for over a half hourLast edited by Bobcat on August 9th, 2013, 9:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Well.. We would go complete axle, though you can cut the old end unit out and have a competent welder replace the spindle with a new one. They dont have to be busted down and a new complete end unit welded on the present axle. Bearings and all remain in place.

I fought bearing issue for two years and wish I had just bought the axle from Bass Cat to start with. Five years trouble free, great brakes again and better tire wear. Was not very hard to change out.

When the axle is fabricated at the factory is there any camber built in to the axle by welding at some degrees other than 90 ?Bob

From the old axle jig days we think 1 1/4″ over 3 or 6 was the top number. Is been a longtime since we set those jigs. We bought the last jig complete and built our first jig in 1982.
