I have a Yamaha 250 on my Cougar FTD and noticed this past weekend that when the motor is trimmed all the way down, the gauge indicator on the console shows half the bars indicating the motor is trimmed up but it isnt. When I hit the trim switch to raise it the rest of the bars on the gauge fill up. If I lower the trim back down as far as the motor will go, the bars still remain half full. The indicator never goes below half full. Any ideas? The issue just suddenly popped up. No issues a week ago. The trim is working fine, the gauge is just not registering correctly.

Mine did the same thing about two weeks ago also. I have not made time to look into it, as the trim works fine and I dont use the gauge much, but I would like to correct the problem. Good question and glad you asked!

Are you using Yamaha Command Link Gauges?

Check rotation on the trim sender though there is limited pivot adjustment. So we think it is a Yamaha part matter which may require a new part.

I have a similiar problem with my Merc EFI and Digi Dash on my Pantera II… My gauge shows as if its trimmed all the way up and it stays that way even if I trim it down… Any chance we can get a photo of the “trim sender” location? Thanks!!

The Trim Sender locations are on the sides of the engine mounting brackets at the pivot points for trim. The Yamaha is tucked under the upper bracket and has an arm that activates the motion. A Mercury is on the left outside and the circular actuator slips into the pivot pin that is the swivel hinge for tilt and trim. You will see it held by two screws. The Mercury is programmable on Smart Craft by holding the Mode Button and the + button from memory and the screen will cycle through the set up. You must hold it until you get through the first initial set up screens that are for lighting and contrast. The next set to pop up will be the programming screens and you can set everything there including the internal clock. Yes you have a clock and more features in the Smart Craft gauges. You should be able to play with programming there. And you may have to cautiously move through the screens and used Screen 2 for programming. Though you can set the trim and tilt range from that gauge. Usually the tachometer is the master gauge. You can also turn off the Trim Pop Up screen there that PoPs up every time you press the trim button. It gets annoying. On the Yamaha you are usually at the mercy of a replacement arm if you can not adjust the angle of the trim sender to accomondate your adjustment. The sender and gauge are not programmable to our understanding on Yamaha. Though we could be wrong there. We only more recently began the Commander System Link set up with Yamaha and the older units prior to 2009 were standard Yamaha or Admiral gauges. Those were defintely not programmable. BCB
