My boat is a 2001 Cougar w/ 225 EFI and since new it has had Phipps 66 Injects oil in it but Carbon seems to be building up bad and a local boat shop said he has switch to I beleive he called it Wake Runner Oil and said it lowers friction and alot less carbon build up. Has anyone heard of or used this oil? He also said that I wouldnt have to drain old oil that it would mix ok with the injects. What are your thoughts? Thanks
Do you use any fuel additive, such as Quickleen? I have been using Pennzoil products on my older EFIs for years, with Quickleen from Mercury. Presently, I have a 96 Mariner 175 EFI that I bought used last May. I am using the Pennzoil synthetic blend XLF(extended life formula) for older engines, along with Quickleen. Yamaha makes “Ring Free” thats works also. Hope this helps.Last edited by jignpig on April 2nd, 2008, 3:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Not using any fuel additive just oil for the 2-smoke.
Quickleen/Ring Free reduce carbon build up for your “2 smoke”96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I agree with JnP above. Use Mercury Quickleen and it will prevent carbon build up. I used it 7-8 years ago with no advantages/disadvantages and if I recall it was a bit pricey. I could get if free is the reason I was using. Wake Runner was produced by a company named BG. Dont know if it is around any longer. Are you fouling plugs? Why not use Mercury or Quick Silver 2 cycle?
Phil, I just had it de-carboned and he said two plugs were fouled. Not bad I guess considering they were original 2001 plugs. Any way the reason I was looking at switching oils was the carbon issue along with the marine shop that sells Wake Runner is located right next to my office and its under 14.00 gallon otherwise I probably would run Mercury. I just want to make sure it is a good oil like he said and not him just making a sales pitch although he does run it in two of his boats with one being a Basscat. Ive never been big on additives but you think this Quickleen is worth the money and on every tank or maybe every other fill up?
Use one ounce to every 6 gal of gas. Costs about $10 for a bottle of Quickleen(16 oz. I think) Pennzoil XLF synthetic blend oil for older engine-$12.50/gal at Wal Mart. Been using Pennzoil/ Quickleen combo since 1995 on 3 different EFIs without problems. Are you using the NGK plugs as well? I change out plugs every 2-3 yrs just out of habit, something that may not be necessary but works for me.Good luck96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
Quickleen is good stuff. Wake Runner also has an additive to mix with the oil to get the results I think youre looking for. You might check into that if you decide to use the stuff. Matter of fact, if you do a google on BG Products you can find additional information. If it were me, I would use the Quickleen and Mercury Oil. Heck, you only got 7 years out of a set of plugs!
My Ole trusty Merc Man tells me that the “Premium Plus” Merc oil does not allow carbon build up. Showdawg
Same with the Pennzoil and their version of Premium Plus. The XLF states “Keeps carbon deposits from forming..” as do most of these Blends. I would look at the fuel additives mentioned, and go from there.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
