Some of you may have seen my post about my fishing partner looking for a p2. Weve found one with some help from the guys here with a single axle trailer. Questions are the pros and cons and how does it pull on a single axle. Any reasons to avoid this deal all together and keep looking for a dual axle?He would be saving about $5k over the closest dual axle we can find. Is there $5k difference really?Purchased new 5/4/15Bass Cat Sabre Vision EliteMercury Pro XS 150MotorGuide 75lb Tour EditionHumminbird – Stock (will be changing soon I hope)
I have a friend that has towed a single axle PII for many years. No problems at all and a whole lot easier to maneuver by hand when needed. There is greater safety and stability with a tandem but BCB would not sell it as single if it was not safe.
I have owned two 19 boats with a single axle trailer. Neither were BCB, and neither were trailers made out of channel, yet both handled fair on the highway, or rough country roads. I feel like with the weight of the PII, as well as a superior trailer under it, you should have zero problems with it. The only real negative I see would be resale value, as most people feel it is a necessity to have a tandem trailer. I love the ride of a tandem, as well as the fact that if I have a blowout, or bearing failure, I can limp somewhere, which I couldnt do with a single axle, but I also miss the maneuverability that I had with those single axle trailers. You can squeeze that 19 boat in a lot smaller garage much easier with the single axle.
I actually prefer the single axle trailer. Very easy to maneuver the boat by hand, and fewer tires and bearings to maintain. Just keep high quality tires on it and keep them aired up, and keep the bearings serviced. You could also carry a spare hub should you ever have a failure. I used to carry one, but never needed it, so I no longer keep one. I use HD Maxxis trailer tires. Use your savings to fund some fishing trips!
I pulled a 2009 PII for 3 years while fishing the Bassmaster Central Opens and had zero Problems. Great trailer and I was from Amaistad in 2010 to Table Rock to Red river to many other areas durning that time span. No problems ,but I did check bearings and the other normal trailering actiites. I also could put it anywhere into just about any parking spot and you could actual move it around by hand .
PII only weighs about 300# more than my Sabre thats been on a single axle for the past 8 years. Ive towed it from Table Rock to Lake Fork and all points in between with no issues. People like a tandem as it looks more impressive and with 4 wheels theres half the load on the working parts. Tandem brings car tires into the mix as an option and some folks like the white letter look. As Captjerry stated – its much easier to maneuver around with a single axle, but you do need to make sure youre using quality tires and you maintain your hubs properly. I use Maxxis UE-168 tires and easily have a 30%+ weight margin for safety. I run the highways at 70+ and it tows like a dream. I cant imagine the additional weight would degrade that in the least.
I had a Classic with a single axle… now own a Sabre single axle…. the trailers now are easy to tow and handle really well…. no problems at all. I wouldnt let the number of tires on the trailer keep me from buying a sweet rig.Not to mention its cheaper to replace two tires than it is 4….
I owned a single axle for many yrs. My p2 is a double. As far as pulling I really cant tell a difference. Where I see the difference is turning in tight places. And maneuverability. Dont get me wrong I think a boat looks better setting on a tandem trailor.if the boat I have right know would have been on a single I woulda still purchace it. In the long run if your gna keep it it will definitely be cheaper to operate.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury

I just put new shoes on the trailer. Wow can you beieve it! It pulls great also. When I had a tandem trailer, someone wanted the Weels and tires more than me. They left me without a trailer on the boat ramp. Now I will never go to a tandem unless I get a 20 footer. If you are wondering why I have a 05 boat on a 01 trailer, I will just say Basscat is the best! With the best customer service.
