just back from a four day trip to da bend. we caught limits, but man did we earn them. nothing bigger than three pounds, too. mostly drug a lizard either weightless or carolina rigged. seemed to struggle all four days, all the while hearing reports of “hundred fish days” and “fish on beds in the clearwater area” just dont know if they were fish stories. we fished the texas side…everything from the flat near the bridge, to the entrance to carrice, the forest service (blackwater creek?), to alpine, to palo gaucho. most fish came in 4-6 feet of water. grass was playing a bigger role than wood for us.water was 53-60 degrees, depending on where we were. found some 63 degree pockets this morning before leaving. gotta say….the old lake was humbling this time around.
They are fooling me……as usual. I think every time they start getting ready to make a big move, the weather changes and messes them up. Ive heard the same about lots of fish being caught but I havent had that experience yet. My best day was Friday when we probably caught 20-25 from 7-shortly after noon. That was the day the front was beginning to move in. We started catching on a Tx rigged lizard but ended up catching on a SPRO frog and having a good time. Nothing over 4 1/2 that day (except one my buddy lost when he pitched a lizard into a trash pile on a point. It looked to be at least 5-6 pounds) We also found them to be in that dead brown grass that day. Previously, and since then, they were on the wood in the area we have been fishing. I went back to the same area on Sunday afternoon. It was fairly calm and clear/blue skies. I was only able to pick up 4 fish in a couple of hours and they were spread out. I caught one in the grass, one off the edge of the grass, one in standing timber, and one off a laydown log. I was thinking the full moon coming up would really have a big wave of females come in but we are predicted for rain for the next 2-3 days. Im not sure if it will shut them down or not. Im still seeing quite a few small buck bass on beds and cruising but I havent seen any “good” fish move up in the areas Im fishing yet. All I can say is that Im not a pro and thank goodness Im not in any tournaments.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
Any idea what the weather is gonna be this weekend. Its changed 4 times looks like. I wonder if Im gonna get wet, real wet or real wet and blown around. Either way me and the kitty are goin.
Bryan, I just checked out the Many forecast. Its showing 80% chance of rain tonight (Thursday), 70% Friday, 60% Friday night, varies from 10-30% Saturday and back to 80% Sunday with “heavy rains and thunderstorms”. I sent you a message before I saw your post on here. If you listen to one of the local guys that does really well on our local tournaments and had an 11 pounder in the McDonalds tournament last year….he says the big fish bite best in the nasty weather. Its hard to argue with his success but I value my health too much to risk holding a lightening rod during a severe storm. Any word on the Red River? The classic guys didnt do to bad a few weeks ago. Just wondering if anyone has tried it..
Sent you an IM back. I can do rain, I can do wind, I can do cold, I can do rain, wind and cold….I dont do lightening. If I start seein lightening cracking around, Ill be on the porch at the camp with a cold one.
60 degrees outside and the boat is covered in SLEET. came from nowhere…all the sudden, little bb sided ice pellets were everywhere. crazy stuff. i was gonna go back this weekend, but threats of 4″ of rain made me say NAH. that much water should lower the lake temp, again.good luck….just be careful in that blasted wind. let us know how you do…im gonna go back the next weekend.
Ill be headed up next weekend for our yearly spring fling for a week. I cant wait for the trip. I just came back from Choke Canyon last week and it was a wonderfull trip. I didnt hook a true giant but caught many 5-6 1/2 lb. fish. I had one of my biggest stringers ever there the last day. It was great and it was even better to share it with my Dad, Brother and Uncle who I rarely get to be in a boat with these days. Lets hope ole Toledo can stack up to Choke!
