Pitch and water temps

How does water temperature affect pitch and RPM? Do boats run faster in cold or warm water?

I have not found water temp to affect anything. Now air temp and humidity is where youll see the difference.

cold air faster, stronger. Can turn more prop then.

I dont know about you guys but when I try to run my puma ftd in January hard as I can it is not as fast as it is in March and April here in Arkansas. Same thing with my p4.Man Id love to hear Rick or Ivans or Garys take on this-Isnt the engine cooling based somewhat on water temp since its water that cools the engine?I also assume that lift is affected by air temp as well.I have always( likely wrongly) assumed that there are about 3 or 4 curves here at optimize in March.I figure colder water has more friction, warmer air is lighter, colder water cools the engine better, colder air with less humidity helps engine as well.Last edited by clownshoes on April 29th, 2011, 8:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.C.O.D. I cant understand how water temp would affect it. If it does though my little brain would think the closer the water got to freezing temps and the molecules slowed down it would make it harder to turn your prop through.Yall keep in mind now that this is just me talking and nothing more, but my best numbers have been at 33 degrees with water temps in the low 40s.

We think fall, winter, spring are all flips that depend on humidity and water temps. Though Summer is the dog days that can flat slow one down loaded. Empty we dont see a nats difference.

I dont have a ton of experience with outboards and air temps. When I used to drag race we would start in the afternoons and race into the night. After dark when the temp drops my car would pick up speed, rpms, and run faster numbers.

It really comes down to science. Perhaps the cooler condensed water gives better propulsion and the warmer less dense water offers less push.It would be nice to have some data on this. I will in the future try and put some together.

I dont think water molecules compress enough to make a difference untill it reaches freezing temp but if they do then it should lower prop slip. Your engine should run cooler with cooler water temps also this may gain some horsepower also but overall air temp, and density is where you will see the biggest difference.Last edited by gchagler on April 29th, 2011, 9:15 pm, edited 1 time in total.
